Civil War: PA State Archives index cards show that he enrolled at Newcastle at 18 years of age and mustered in as Pvt at Harrisburg for a 3 month tour on April 25, 1861. Co H of the 12th Reg. The Co mustered out Aug 5, 1861. The next record shows he mustered in Aug 31, 1861 for 3 years as 2nd Leut in Co K of 100th Reg. Promoted to Adjutant on July 12, 1862. The next card only gives Co. F & S of the 100th Reg Infantry. Samuel was killed in action at the Battle of the Crater (also known as the Battle of the Mine Explosion) near Petersburg, VA, on July 30, 1864. (His uncle, Major Thomas J. Hamilton of the 100th PA Volunteers was also killed in the same battle.)  Samuel G. Leisure is listed as serving in Co.K of the !00th PA Vol. Infantry, "The Roundheads" buried in Greenwood Cemetery, New Castle, PA - from "History of Lawrence County" by SW &PA Durant, 1871
