BRISTOL, Tenn. – Quentin Herman Lewis Sr., age 90, died
peacefully on Jan. 23, 2009, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol
Tennessee following an extended illness.
He was born in Partridge, Ky., on June 28, 1918, to the
late Willie F. Lewis and Ada Dixon Lewis. Mr. Lewis was an active member
of the First Baptist Church of Bristol Virginia for more than 50 years and
served on the board of deacons. He was also a chairperson for the church
board of administration, taught Sunday school for several years and was a
member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin
R. Lewis, and sisters, Irene L. Reynolds and Willa Mullins.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jean Hembree Lewis;
one son, Quentin Lewis Jr. of Bristol Virginia; one daughter, Leigh
Stewart, Morristown, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Meredith Stewart,
Durham, N.C., Catherine Stewart, Alexandria, Va., and Jennifer Stewart,
Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Evaleen "Pat" Towery, Austin, Texas; and
several nieces and nephews.
After the death of his father, Mr. Lewis at age 5, along with his brothers
and sisters, entered the Junior Order United American Mechanics orphanage
in Tiffin, Ohio. He graduated from this high school in 1937 and
subsequently entered and later graduated from the University of Kentucky
in Lexington in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. Mr.
Lewis was a loyal Kentucky Wildcat supporter for all of his life. He was
awarded the Kentucky Colonel distinction and was a member of the Society
of Professional Engineers.
After graduating from UK, Mr. Lewis entered the U.S. Army and was on
active duty with the 1st Army, 99th "Checkerboard" infantry division,
under the command of Major General Walter Lauer in World War II. He served
his country with the Allied forces in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944
and 1945. He was involved in helping to secure the Remagen Bridge in
Germany and continued to serve in the U.S. Army in the European theater
until the end of the war. Mr. Lewis retired from the regular Army but
remained in the Army Reserve for many years, obtaining the rank of major
before his retirement.
Mr. Lewis began his civil engineering career with D.E.
Perkins architectural and engineering firm in Harlan, Ky., and later
joined Bristol Steel & Iron Works in 1953. Later he was appointed as chief
estimator in the sales department until his retirement from Bristol Steel
in 1983.
He was also a past board member of the Bristol Speech & Hearing Center and
was an active member of the Bristol Host Lions for many years.
Mr. Lewis had a special place in his life for his wife, Jean, and all of
his family as well as the members of First Baptist Church. In addition, he
developed lifelong friendships with many of his co-workers at Bristol
Steel. His quiet strength, mannered disposition and pleasant nature left a
lasting impression on many who knew him over the course of his life.
The family of Mr. Lewis would like to express their grateful appreciation
to all of the caregivers and the kindness shown by healthcare workers
during the past several years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2009, at the
First Baptist Church sanctuary, with Dr. David Stancil officiating. The
committal service and burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26,
2009, at Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, Va. The family will receive
friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. before the funeral service in the
Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be
made to First Baptist Church, 1 Virginia St., Bristol, VA, 24201; or
Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620; or the
charity of your choice.

Rites held for Quentin Lewis
Quentin Herman Lewis Sr. died January 23, 2009 in Bristol, Tenn. He was 90 years
old. Born in Partridge, he was a son of the late Willie F. and Ada Dixon Lewis,
and was a brother of the late Edwin R. Lewis, Irene Reynolds and Willa Mullins.
Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bristol, Va., for more than 50
years, where he was deacon, taught Sunday School, and was a chairperson of the
church board administration.
He was reared at the Junior Order United American Mechanics orphanage in Tiffin,
Ohio, and was graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of
science degree in civil engineering. He was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and a
member of the Society of Professional Engineers.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Army Reserve. Surviving are
his wife, Jean Hembree Lewis; a son, Quentin Lewis Jr. of Bristol, Va.; a
daughter, Leigh Stewart of Morristown, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Meredith
Stewart of Durham, N.C.; Catherine Stewart of Alexandria, Va.; and Jennifer
Stewart of Charlestown, S.C.; and a sister, Evaleen "Pat" Towery of Austin, Tex.
Funeral services were held January 26 at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in
the Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol.
