The John P. Madden General Merchandise was one of the first stores in the area where John lived. Once the railroad was built, John used wagons to haul his merchandise from the train stop in Jeff, Kentucky. John P.'s father William Madden was killed at his home during the Civil War. George Madden, grandfather of John P., was the pioneer who settled Irishman Creek (in present-day Knott Co, KY) and named it in honor of his Irish ancestry.
