4651. Johnny Augustus Hobart Miniard , Sr.
Following notes from source, Lee Hubbard:
Hobart and Rebecca lived on their hillside farm about 150 yards below the mouth of John's Branch. They owned most of John's Branch and part of Dollar Branch located on Greasy Creek in Leslie County, KY. Hobart was a crack shot and obtained much of their Table meat at shooting matches. He was so good that many of the people who knew him would not shoot against him...knowing that their chances of beating him were almost nil. In his younger days, Hobart was on Coon Creek at a good time girl's house when a fellow came to see the good-time gal and he took offense at Hobart's presence and a gun battle ensued in which Hobart was shot four times and Hobart began firing and emptied his 32-20 Smith&Wesson into the other shooter and the other shooter injured was helped on his mule by his buddy and got away to die from his bullet wounds a few days later. Hobart was badly wounded and was taken to Sam Maggard's house nearby and Rebecca was assigned the task of taking care of him and they became a pair....rather a strange looking pair for she towered over him. She was about 5'7" and Hobart was about 5' tall and she was a head taller than him.
Later in life Hobart's brother, Cooper, and brother in law, Charlie, were making Moonshine as many mountaineers of the time did and the revenuers found the still and Cooper talked Hobart into claiming responsibility for the still and promised him that he would use his influence in the county seat to get him off and Grandma Miniard gave Cooper the money to get Hobart out of trouble and Cooper absconded with the money to Virginia and stayed until Hobart had been convicted and sent to Atlanta, Georgia federal prison where he spent 18 months. Carol was born to them about ten years after Hobart returned from prison.
Near the end of his life, his mate died off on him and the children took turns staying with him because he was somewhat frail and needed some care. He became ill and was hospitalized. He hated being in the hospital and tried to get them to let him out long before he was well. When he did get out he apparently made up his mind that that would not happen again. When he began to show signs of becoming ill again, he and his son who was staying with him at the time took a cup of coffee out on the porch to sit and relax. Shortly, he got up and went into the house. He got his 38 and a pillow. He laid down on the couch with the pillow under his head and stuck the pistol in his mouth and ended his misery and loneliness.
Notes from source, Lee Hubbard:
Rebecca was, in addition to being mother and homemaker for her family, the Post Master at Napier Post Office and she ran a small general store in the same building which was located down by the road from their house. The rest room for post office and store was an out door toilet which was nailed to a big sycamore tree across the road from the post office. She was reluctant to allow Hobart run her store because he would allow his old buddies to buy on credit and she usually didn't get paid.

Notes for Hattie Ellen Seiber:
"A History of Anderson County Tennessee" by R. Clifford Seeber, August 10, 1928.
Excerpt: A typical family quarrel of the kind was the Seiber-Duncan feud. Phillip Seiber, a prosperous slave owner of Frost Bottom, a small valley community in the mountain section of the county, was supposed to have sent to the Confederate authorities a Clinton a list of the Union sympathisers from the Frost Bottom vicinity. At any rate, Confederate troops were sent to Frost Bottom. They arrested several men in that vicinity and took them to Knoxville as prisoners of war. The prisoners secured their release, however, by enlisting in the Confederate Army, but upon the first opportunity they deserted and fled into the mountains near their home. Others remained in the mountains near the homes, joining gorilla bands in that vicinity. Phillip Seiber was murdered in the door of his cabin. Some of the members of the Duncan family who had been arrested by the Confederate soldiers were accused of the deed. A little later Wilson Duncan, A Union Scout, who had been guiding bands of Union men throughout the mountains into Kentucky was killed from ambush. The feud was on.
