Mary Jo Short
Gross, 55, of Pathfork passed away Monday, August 17, 2009 at Central Baptist
Hospital in Lexington following a long illness. Mary Jo was a native of Harlan County and lived in the area all of her
life. She was a homemaker and loving mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arville and Marie Johnson
Short.
Survivors
include two sons, Gary E. Gross, Pathfork; Dennis N. Gross, Richmond; two
grandchildren, Kenzie Lee Gross, Pathfork and Tabitha Marie Gross, Richmond;
six brothers, William Short, Chicago, IL, Archie Short and Bobby Short, both of
Cumberland, Orville Short, Mitchell, IN, Cliston Short and Shannon Short, both
of Brandenburg; three sisters, Shirley Creech, Baltimore, MD, Teleda McCall,
Ovenfork, and Shandeal Fields, Cumberland, along with a host of nieces,
nephews, and friends. Visitation will be
held 6-8pm Wednesday, August 19, 2009 and Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Tri City
Funeral Home in Benham. Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Friday,
August 21, 2009 in the Chapel of Tri City Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Oplinger
officiating. Interment will follow in Short Cemetery at Elkins Branch. Gary Gross, Dennis Gross, Cliston Short,
David Short, Daniel McCall, and Chris Hill will serve as pallbearers.

History of Present Illness:
Patient is a 58 year old Caucasian male, with a history of small cell cancer of the lungs, status post radiation and chemotherapy. The patient reported increased fatigue, fever and cough productive of yellowish sputum, over the week prior to admission. The patient ws initially seen at the emergency dept. in Tooele, and subsequently transferred to LDS Hosp. for further treatment of presumed pneumonia.
Past Medical History:
Significant for small cell carcinoma of the lung, leading to radiation and chemotherapy, and subsequent radiation pneumonitis.
Social History:
Patient had smoked one and a half packs per day over 34 years, but had reportedly quit smoking approximately one to two years prior to admission. The patient worked as a maintenance worker, and was in the process of moving from Texas to Portland, and was visiting relatives in Tooele.

On 2/15/99 all medical support was withdrawn, and the patient experienced a quick decline over the next several minutes, and was pronounced dead at 1042 hours.
