Obituary - Sherd Martin died September 6, 2007 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY. He was 100 years old. Born in Letcher County, KY, he was a son of the late Alex and Emma Hall Martin Meade, and a stepson of the late John P. Meade. He was the father of the late Archie Martin, and a brother of the late Luther Martin, Dewey Martin, Virgie Rose, Della White, and Daisy Hall. He was the father-in-law of the late Ellen Martin. He and his wife, the late Alma Hickman Martin, were married for 78 years. The couple were often featured in The Mountain Eagle in columns written by their good friend, the late Mabel Kiser, who wrote the Millstone news. Mrs. Martin died May 9, 2007. Sherd Martin had been member of the Thornton Old Regular Baptist Church at Mayking, KY since 1931, and was coal miner at South East Coal Company for 36 years. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are five sons, Joseph Martin and wife Joyce, and Darrell Martin and wife Ronna, all of Louisville; Lester Martin and wife Janice, Lorain, Ohio; Sherdie Martin and wife Dorcus, Scottsville, KY; and Dennis Martin, Clarkson, KY; six daughters, Leatrice Reedy and husband Bob, Irvine, KY; Greta Bennett and husband Clinton, Harrodsburg, KY; Donna Nadine West and husband Don, Louisa, KY; and Sharon Chandler and husband Greg, Cowan, KY; a sister, Loretta Quillen, Deane, KY; 29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held September 9, 2007 at the Thornton Old Regular Baptist Church at Mayking, KY. Burial was in the Thornton Cemetery, Thornton, KY.
