7 June 1945

Mrs. Patton W. Clawson
Woodway, Virginia

Re: Pfc. Patton W. Clawson, 33659637
Company "K" 11th Infantry

Dear Mrs. Clawson:
This is the first opportunity I have had to answer your letter of February 7th, 1945, and give you more information concerning the death of your husband.
As you have already been informed: your husband was killed on 6th of December 1944. Our 3rd Battalion, of which "K" Company is a part, had the mission of seizing and holding the town of Klienrosseln, Germany. It was during this action that your husband and two others were killed instantly by enemy artillery fire. The sucess of the mission was accomplished, but at the great price of the death of your husband and a few others.
Information from official records reveals that your husband was "killed-in-action" 6 December 1944. He was buried in the United States Military Cemetery at Limey, Lorraine, France; Plot T, Row 1, Grave No. 5.
Your husband was well-thought of by his "buddies" and officers in the Company. I'm sure that you will receive some consolation in knowing that the part your husband played went a long way in the final defeat of so despicable an enemy as we were fighting. I trust that his life shall not have been sacrificed in vain. Again, May I commend you to our God who will sustain you in His great love.

Sincerely,
William S. Jones
Chaplain (Capt), US
11th Infantry
