 James Middleton b about 1825 d about 1865 at the end of the Civil War; m. Abigail Blevins. (10 children born before 1865). At the end of the war, James Middleton was returning home when he was captured by a band of men who tortured, dismantled and killed him, hiding his body in a hollow log where it was found several years later in the Devil's Den section of Stone Mountain. There is no certain connection but it is not improbable that the band of men were Devil Jim's (James "Devil Jim" Turner) own gang, and that Devil's Den was their hideout. Like his brother-in-law Hugh Eldridge, James left a large family behind, ten children ages four to nineteen. Children of James H Middleton and Abigail Blevins;

IV. James T Middleton b 1850 Harlan Co KY d 1890 Harlan Co KY; murdered by Enos Hensley, Wm McGraw, James Howard
Note: August 8,-Murdered last Monday evening as James T. Middleton, better known as "Rocky Mountain Jim," Harlan County, was coming to Harlan Court House from the election in company with James Giles preparatory to coming to London as a witness in the Jennings case and when he had reached a point about four or five miles from the town on Catrons Creek, he was fired on from behind trees in the woods by unknown parties and instantly killed. He was shot through and through five or six times with 44 Winchester balls, judging from the wounds. Mr. Giles escaped without injury, the parties probably not having any feeling against him and making the dash to get away as soon as the firing began. Enos Hensley, William McGraw and James Howard were arrested, charged with the murder, but it is the general impression that they were not guilty. They were arrested in consequence of some ill feeling which was engendered between the men at the election, while others we learn suspect friends of Wils Howard as doing it, Mr. Middleton was one of the best known men of Harlan county, and known to be a brave and daring fellow; m. 6 Nov 1871 Harlan Co KY (by Abner Fee, JP in the home of Henderson Fee; Witnessed by Henderson Fee and George Fee) to Manerva Fee b Dec 1849 Harlan Co KY d 5 Jun 1936 Harlan Co KY; d/o John Gregg Fee and Jane Lee.
