(Source) John lived with his wife on Georges Fork, where his son Harmon H. Mullins now lives and, with the exception of about three years spent at his father's old home in Clintwood, VA., he lived there until his death.

This story was related to me by Frances Hickey who is the g granddaughter of John Henry Mullins.

Roger, My Grandma Mary Ann Hibbitts Howard d/o Malinda Mullins Hibbitts was born in 1873 at the Pound and lived there until she was 18 years old. She stayed with her grandparents John Henry and Polly Mullins some. She talked of them very much. So she knew of happenings in and around Clintwood. I lived with Grandma since I was about 8 years old, after Grandpa died in 1941. We used to set by the fireplace on winter nights, and she would tell me all sorts of stories. I have forgotten lots of the things she told me, but apparently there are still dormant memories for lots of times when things are mentioned I get an overpowering feeling of whether it is true or not. I well remember the story she told me of the groundbreaking ceremonies for the court house at Clintwood. Since Logan went to prison I'm sure there are court records of his trial and conviction. Grandma would have been about 7 years old at the time, and then children paid more attention to what affected the family. She would have been about 17 when Logan was released from prison. I didn't remember the name of the man who tried to kill gg grandpa Mullins. I related the story to a older man who I met at the Hibbitts cemetery at Hibbitts Gap, he listened to the story without a comment. And at the end he just said "Pressley". What I never could understand was why Logan went to prison for defending his father.

Here is the story:

I'll tell you a story my Grandma told me. When they split the other counties up to form Dickenson Co. several men offered land to build the court house on, each wanting the county seat to be near their homes. John Henry Mullins land was accepted. There was at least one man who was furious because his land wasn't chosen. This one man vowed that on the day of the ground breaking ceremonies "I'll kill John Mullins or wear a wooden bonnet home". He wore a wooden bonnet home for when he went at John Mullins with a knife, John's 18 year old son Logan picked up a rock and hit him in the head with it. The man's skull was caved in and when a doctor drilled into it to try and pull the skull off the brain he died. Logan was tried and sent to prison for ten years.
Story related by Frances Hibbitts.

(This story was related to me by Frances Hibbitts. She is the gg grand daughter of John Mullins through his daughter Malinda. I am also the gg grand son of John through his daughter Jennie. Jennie and Malinda being sisters, Jennie named one of her children Malinda after her sister which turned out to be my great grandmother.)
