VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR TELLS OF HIS PART IN CONFLICT
The following letter has been written to Wayne County News by
Uncle Hance Gilkerson, well known citizen of the Beech Fork
section of this county. A picture of Mr. Gilkerson accompanies
this article. In his letter which follows, he gives an intimate
glimpse ofhis part in the great conflict between the North and
South in the days from 1861 to 1865. Here's his letter:
Wayne County News
Wayne, W. Va.
Gentlemen:
I saw a request in Wayne County News for a list of Civil War
veterans of Wayne county. I am one of them. My name is Charles
Hansford Gilkerson, betterknown in Wayne county as "Uncle Hance"
Gilkerson.
I have passed the middleof my 84th year. I joined the army in
1862 and fought on the Confederate side. Kindreck was captain of
Company H. Ferguson was Colonel of the 15th regiment to which I
belonged. Jenkins was our general.
Now I will not go into detail to mention all of the minor
engagements in which I had a part, but willonly mention a
few of the things that might be of interest to your readers.
We left Wayne County Court House and went to Kanawha and went
with Lowbern when he left the Valley. We went on and pitched
camp in Roanoke County, Virginia, near Salem. We wintered there,
and when Spring came we started on the raid to the North, going
down the Shenandoah Valley. At Winchester, Virginia, the
Confederates met the Union army and we routed them.
We followed on North and we had been fighting every day till we
got to Gettysburg. There we hadplenty to do, as you all know.
For three days it was the bloodiest of bloody battles.
From Gettysburg we had to fight our way back till we got to
Culpepper Court House in Virginia.
At that time I got a furlough for ten days tocome home. So
when I went back I got with the regiment in Greenbrier County
and from there we started another raid toward the border. And
it was on that trip that I was taken a prisoner on the hill
between Twelve Pole and Beech Fork at the John Barbour place.
From there they took me as prisoner to Barboursville and then
to Charleston and from there to Wheeling and then to Camp Chase,
and from there to Fort Delaware. So from the time I was taken
prisoner it was eighteen months until I got out of service and
back home on June 21, 1865, after
Lee's surrender.

The Muncy's first came to Tazewell Co about 1783. Most came from Mass., N
ew York, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Munsey name finds its origin in ancient Rome and individuals bearing t
he Muncey name accompanied William the Conqueror in his conquest of Briti
an in 1066. The earliest Muncy ancestor found on record in the United Sta
tes is Francis Munsey I.
Francis Munsey I, an Englishman, arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colo
ny in the first half of the Seventeenth century. Records show that he mar
ried Hannah Adams on Dec 6, 1659 inIpswich, Massachusetts. After their m
arriage they moved to Brookhaven, NewYork and there they had two sons-Jo
hn and Samuel.
John Munsey married HannahBrewster, the granddaughter of Rodger Ludlow, t
he first Deputy of the Connecticut Colony. Ludlow is among a select gro
up of early New England Colonistswho can claim descent from a Norman Ki
ng of England, Edward I.
John and Hannah Brewster Munsey had a son by the name of Francis II who w
as born circa 1690. Francis II married Abigail Skidmore and with her brot
hers ventured to Delaware. Francis and Abigail Munsey had a son, Samue
l, born soon after the turn of the eighteenth century.
Samuel, son of Francis and Abigail Skidmore Munsey, inherited a large toba
cco plantation in Montgomery County, Virginia fromhis uncle, Thomas Skidm
ore. Samuel and his wife had six sons. His second son was Skidmore Munse
y, who married Mary the daughter of Samuel Scott. He and Mary lived in Mo
ntgomery County, Virginia and raised eight children there.Skidmore Muns
ey served in Captain Patton's Company during the RevolutionaryWar.
David Munsey, second son of Skidmore and Mary Scott Munsey, was born Mar
ch 10, 1773 and went to Russell County, Virginia sometime before the tu
rn of the nineteenth century. The exact date cannot be pin-pointed d
ue to fire destroying early Russell County records.
David Munsey was a Methodist Ministerand his name may be found on reco
rd at Emory and Henry College. David married Mary, daughter of Francis a
nd Elizabeth Vermillion Browning. She was a niece of Enos Browning who
se children settled in Logan County, West Virginia andspawned the Browni
ng clan of this area.
Children of David and Mary BrowningMunsey:
1. Abraham Munsey, b. Aug. 27, 1794
2. Isaac Munsey, b. Jan. 16, 1797
3. Elizabeth Munsey, b. Oct. 14, 1808
4. Mary Munsey, b. Jan. 12, 1811
5. Rhoda Munsey, b. Dec 13, 1814
6. Nancy Munsey, b. Aug. 15, 1818
7. Rachel Munsey, b. Jan 1, 1824
David and Mary's second son, Rev. Isaac Munsey married Martha "Patsy", dau
ghter of Thomas and Nancy Dickenson Dickenson, and grand daughter of Hen
ry Dickenson, Jr., first County Clerk of Russell County, Virginia wh
en it was formed from Washington County in 1786. He still held thisposit
ion at the time of his death in 1825. Rev. Isaac and "Patsy" Dickenson M
unsey had six children. They were:
1. Harvey Munsey
2. David Munsey,b. Nov.13, 1822 married Biddie Ann Willis
3. Richard Munsey, b. 1825
4. Mary Munsey
5. Martha Munsey
6. Nancy "Nannie" Munsey
The above children arethe nieces an nephews of my great grandmother, Eliz
abeth Dickenson Erwin. (This information taken from Irene Erwin Moore)
Martha "Patsy" Dickenson Munseywas born in 1800 and Elizabeth Dickenson E
rwin was born in 1803. They were the only children of Thomas and Nancy Di
ckenson Dickenson (first cousins). Thomas was the son of Henry, Jr. and M

"Grace(Ratliff) of Buchanan Co, Va and I also discussed the Childress a
nd Goodmanconnections. There was a Jessee Childress that had family prob
lems...children by women other than his wife. Jessee left home and to
ok to the river. Hebecame a flat boat peddler. He would go North, buy s
upplies, load them on aflat boat and come down river and sell suppli
es to settlers along the way. Evidently Jessee did this for several reaso
ns. Grace seems to think Grandma Mary Muncy Goodman was another of his ch
ildren. This is also supported by Ansel Childress, another fellow genealog
ist. Ancil is in his seventies and has been researching his family for yea
rs. He is also a Church of Christ preacherwho knows everyone in probab
ly five counties. In fact, Ancil was the one whoinformed me that Mary Go
odman's maiden name was not Muncy but Childress. (In WAyne Co, WV marria
ge records, Mary's name is listed as Mary Muncy, motheris listed as Eliza
beth Muncy and the father is blank! dat) And the more I check and questi
on this, the more it seems that Ancil knwos what he is talkingabout. Anc
il has all the info on the Childress as does Grace."
