Some stories remembered by Pearl Goodman Keene.
Mary Muncy's mother, Elisabeth Muncy, didn't want her so Uncle Tom Mun
cy raised her. Mary's father, ? Childress, owned a trading boat on the O
hio River near Ironton, Ohio. Elisabeth Muncy, mother of Mary, later marr
ied George Church and lived in Buchanan Co, Va.Elizabeth had a son Isi
ah Muncy, whose father is rumored to be a Loveless. She also had a son, T
homas, B. Abt 1875, who was probably the Loveless' man son too. When Ma
ry Muncy died her brother, Thomas, came from McDowell Co,WV to preach h
er funeral.
Mary Muncy and Elivra Goodman, daughter of William, were playing in a ca
ke oven and it fell over on them. Mary was saved by Elvira, accordi
ng to the story by Pearl Goodman, otherwise we all wouldn't behere!
James Goodman and Mary Muncy Goodman and James' parents, William Goodma
n, had a house boat on the Ohio River. They would go out on the river f
ornine days or so and would tie up at night on the river bank. James Go
odmantraded a suit of clothes for a cook stove to cook on while on the bo
at. Alsoon the boat was James' sister Elvira and her husband Walt Morga
n.
The daythat James Goodman and Mary Muncy married the preacher was la
te in gettingthere so they went to bed in separate beds and when the prea
cher came in themiddle of the night and married them they went back to b
ed together.
Mary Muncy Goodman would work all week for 75 cents a day and when she h
ad saved $5.00 she would buy a complete outfit of clothes, " from the insi
de out".
In the official records, like her marriage certificate, Mary is list
ed as MUNCY, Dau of Elizabeth MUNCY. Mary's place of birth is listed as L
awrence Co, Ky.,which is across the river from Wayne Co, WV. No fath
er is listed. Source:Wayne Co, WV court records.
Cynthia Stone.
Cynthia Stone Goodman died in Wayne Co, WV when she probably caught pneumo
nia after carrying snow in her apron trying to put out a fire in her hous
e. (According to her death cert. she died of TB)
James Goodman died of probably blood poison/infection after he stabbed h
is left hand splitting nubbins (corn stalks?) for his pigs. His son wasg
one and didn't get home till "Friday" evening and before that there w
as no one to take James to the Doctor. He was 64 years old. He probab
ly had diabetes also.
