Index | Maywood Martin Amburgey, age 76, of Pine Top, Kentucky passed away Thursday, July 30, 2008 at her home after a long illness. Born December 11, 1931, she was the daughter of Ibra Martin and Marie Hall Martin. Maywood was a member of the Reynolds Fork Old Regular Baptist Church, a retired grocer, former executive of Miss America preliminaries and Little Miss Kentucky Pageants. She was preceded in death by her husband- Ivan J. Amburgey and 1 Sister- Miami Martin. She is survived by 2 Daughters- Theresa (Scott) Grimes of Ashland, KY and Susan Amburgey of Pine Top, KY; 1 Sister- Rose Wiwi; 3 Brothers- Amom Martin, Anon Martin and Namon Martin; 4 Grandchildren- Austin Phillip (Crystal) Hicks, Autumn Suzanne (Micah) Cavender, Jacqueline Michelle (Duncan) Smith and Steven Scott Grimes; Future Great Grandchild- Presley Jayleigh Cavender. Funeral services for Maywood Martin Amburgey will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, August 3, 2008 at the Hindman Funeral Services Chapel with Charles (Chuck) Keesee, Elwood Cornett and Jim Fields officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mountain Memory Gardens at Hindman, KY. Visitation will be held Friday at 6:00 PM and Saturday at 6:00 PM with additional services Saturday evening at 7:00 PM. Robert Combs, 76, of Fisty, died Tuesday June 24, 2008 at his home. He was born in Ritchie, Ky., on Febuary 25, 1932, to Burley Combs and Catherine Jent, both of whom preceded his death. He was also preceded in death by 4 Brothers- Burley Jr., A.D., S.C., Wilson, and Leslie. 1 Sister - Martha Sue Gibbins. He is survived by very special companion - Shirley Smith; 3 Daughters - Toni Ann Beaver, Robin Ramey, and Deanna Combs; 2 Sons - R.B. Combs and Robert Daniel Combs; 1 Step - son - Jay B. Smith; Brothers - Frank Combs and Enos Combs; Sisters - Dora Young, Matilda Patrick, and Juanita Crawford; Hosts of grandchildren and great - grandchildren, family and friends. Funeral Services are Friday June 27, 2008, 11 AM at the Clear Creek Regular Baptist Church. Visitation beginning Wednesday 1 PM and Thursday at the church. Burial to follow at the Burley Combs Cemetery in Fisty, Kentucky. Bill Ellish, of Rainsville, AL, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2007 at his residence, surrounded by family and friends. Bill was a Vietnam veteran who enlisted in the military at the age of 17. He served honorably in both the United States Air Force from Sept. 29, 1951 to July 26, 1962 and the Army from August 28, 1962 until June 31, 1973, a total of 21 years and nine months. During his Air Force term he spent 4 years overseas in Guam, Spain and Tripoli. While in the Army he served three separate tours in Vietnam, assigned to the 1st Brigade Battalion to the 121st Aviation company as a firefighter (counter insurgency); from July 1967 to July of 1968 he was assigned to the 336th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter) as an assistant maintenance supervisor. Records show honorable discharge into retirement on May 28, 1971, from the 22nd Aviation Det. Pirmasens, Germany as SFC E-7 as Aircraft maintenance Supervisor. He served unselfishly with distinction and valor, making a lasting difference to our Nation’s freedom and to the world. Immortalized at the Washington Vietnam Memorial Wall, he is a soldier that will not be forgotten. Bill was also instrumental in establishing the War Memorial Service every year, in his hometown of McRoberts,Kentucky. The service honors veteran from each war and branches of military. Bill has also participated in fund raising to assist veteran’s families in Fort Payne, AL., as well as being instrumental in the development of the Vietnam Veterans Southern Command in Fort Payne. “He served with pride”. Bill Ellish was born May 24, 1934, the youngest of seven siblings, in the coalmining town of McRoberts, KY. in Letcher County. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Fort Payne, AL. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Ellish and Margaret Szitas Ellish who both were Hungarian immigrants; his brother Louie Ellish, who was killed in WWII; sister Helen Ellish Hall; brothers Charley Ellish, and Joe Ellish. He is survived by daughter Stephanie Ellish Hooper (Michael) of Ringgold, Ga, sons, Johnathan William Ellish (Sherry) of Ringgold, GA. William Stephenson Ellish of Dallas, Texas. Grandchildren are Ashley Ellish, Brandon Ellish, Erica (Brian) Bowles, Crystal (Greg) Wheatley, Rebekah (Jason) Mashburn,Great grandchild, Caden Mashburn. Survivors also include a brother John Ellish Jr. of Rainsville, AL. and , several nieces and nephews. Larry P. England, Sr., age 64 of Fairborn, passed away Tuesday August 12, 2008. He was born August 21, 1943 in Pike Co., Kentucky, the son of the late John and Thursa (Huston) England. Larry served his country in the United States Navy, retiring at the rank of GMGC in 1987 following 26 years of service. He followed with employment at Heritage Lighting in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was currently employed with CPD-OH in Miamisburg, Ohio. His memberships include the VFW 6861 in Fairborn, and the Fleet Reserve Association. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Lee England; a sister, Betty Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Jesse Vance. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Marilyn; a son, Larry, Jr. of Fairborn; a daughter, Theresa Crossland and husband Phillip of Chesapeake, Virginia; two grandchildren, Tamara A. England of Fairborn, Brandon J. Hamby of Chesapeake, Virginia; a sister, Peggy Vance of Fairborn; mother-in-law, Evelyn Teague of Fairborn; sister and brother-in-law, Woolard and Carolyn Morgan of Dayton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn, OH. Condolences may be made to the family at www.BeltonStroup.com. ENNIS, Auda Thomas 92, of Springfield, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008. Auda was born November 21, 1915 in Pine Top, Kentucky to James Monroe and Nancy (Pigman) Thomas. Following graduation from Carr Creek High, she attended business school in Boston and worked in a factory that supplied devices for the Navy during World War II. She married Robert Ennis of Burlington, Vermont in 1945, moving to Dayton and later Springfield. Primarily a homemaker, Auda worked part-time, retiring from Springfield City Schools as a teacher's aide. A gentle lady of quiet sensibility and happy spirit, Auda was a most wonderful mother and grandmother. She excelled at cooking, quilting and crocheting. In later years, she kept her mind active with puzzle books and mystery novels. She remained in her own home due to devoted care by grandson, Jason. Auda is survived by four children, Robert (Janet) Ennis, Jr., Donna (Ronnie) Stephenson, Gloria Ennis (Choon Moo Yang) and Thomas Ennis; Grandchildren, Jennifer (Bret) DeLong, Andrea Barker (Dennis Suggs), Tammy White, Trisha Ennis, Megan (Jonathan) Tarvin, Jason Ennis, Kenton (Natalie) Ennis, Michael Ennis and Jonathan Yang; Great grandchildren, RaeLonda, Brandon, Logan, Symone, Andrea, Alicia, DaWayne, Ayshia, Blake, Aubrey, Eli, Wyatt and Auda; Great- great granddaughter, Aneya; Two sisters, Nora Bates and Myrtle Spilker; brother, LaVernon Thomas and a number of nieces and nephews. Auda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and five sisters. Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in Conroy Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Powell of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Kenneth Aaron Fields Sr., 72 formerly of Middletown, OH passed away on July 26, 2008 at the Atrium Medical Center. He was born on January 24, 1936 in Letcher County, KY. Kenneth worked as a machinist for 46 years at the Sorg Paper Co., retiring in 2000. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Middletown and the Past Master of the Jefferson Lodge # 90 F & AM, he was also a Shriner, he enjoyed bowling, vacationing, spending time with his family and he loved to dance. He was known for his sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents; Aaron and Maude (Cornett) Fields, a son; Kenneth Aaron Fields Jr., a brother; David Lee Fields and a brother-in-law; William Ash. He is survived by his wife of 45 years; Shirley Wilson Fields, his daughters; Bridgette Sue (James) Cox of Lebanon, OH, Elizabeth "Becky" Katherine (Mike) Tillery of Fairfield, OH and Karen Hope Fields of Middletown, OH, a son Brad Fields of CA, 7 Grandchildren; Jeremy Fields, Ashley Davidson, Andrew Cox, Meredith Tillery, Aaron Cox, Samuel Cox and Andrea Cox, a great-grandchild; Jennah Davidson, 3 brothers; Donald E. Frisby, age 81 of Fairborn, passed away Tuesday May 6, 2008 in the Hospice of Dayton following a brief illness. He was born January 1, 1927 in Lothair, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Madeline (Cooper) Frisby; and by his wife of 47 years, Lorene Frisby in 1994. Bob was employed as a Heat Plant Supervisor at WPAFB, Civil Engineering Squadron, until retirement in 1983. Prior to that he served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and earned several decorations which included: WW II Victory Medal, Army of European Occupation Medal, and the African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He and his dog “Tiffany” were avid Kentucky Wildcat basketball fans and loved to watch every game. Bob will always be remembered as a caring, compassionate and loving man who always put others needs before his own. He is survived by his children, Robert J. (Martha) Frisby, Jr. of Huber Heights, Debra (Danny) Hall of Fairborn, Rick (Christine) Frisby of Beavercreek; grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Bochenek, James Frisby, Kristopher (Rebecca) Hall, Kelli Hall and Walter Shade, and Sarah Cantrell; great-grandchildren, Alex, Ben, and Stephanie Bochenek, Lillian Hall; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Edith Reynolds Gibson, age 92, of Mousie, KY, passed away July 28, 2008 at Central Baptist Hospital at Lexington, KY. She was born in Raven, Ky., on March 10, 1916, to William and Frankie Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her husband: Van Gibson; daughters: Phyllis Slone, Betty Samons and Patricia Schaible; 1 son: Van Gibson Jr. She is survived by 3 sons - William E. Gibson, Robert W. Gibson and Commodore Gibson; 4 daughters - Verna Wiley, Brenda Spilger, Virginia Osborne and Deborah Handshoe; 1 sister - Esther Owens; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the Ball Branch Regular Baptist Church with Roger Hicks, Ralph Howard and Kelly Slone officiating. Burial followed at the Gibson Cemetery at Mousie, KY under the direction of the Hindman Funeral Services, Hindman, Knott Co KY. Annetha Ferl Hurst, 68, of Sergent passed away Friday, July 4, 2008 at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Annetha was the daughter of the late Ernest and Sadie Robbins Hurst. Surviving are 3 daughters: Billie Hatton of Sergent, Patricia Ison of Cowan, and Donna Collins of Jenkins; 1 stepdaughter: Barbara Harris of Indiana; 1 stepson: Carlos Caudill of Jenkins; 1 brother: Leslie Hurst of Bell County; 2 sisters: Glezlann Hurst and Brenda Hurst both Michigan; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Hall Cemetery at Ermine, Kentucky. MULLINS Gene Tuney Mullins, born February 7, 1931, in Myra, KY, raised in Haysi, VA. He was the fifth child of the late General M. and Lillie (Epling) Mullins. Gene move to Grove City in 1954. Preceded in death his first wife of 30 years Delphia Gaynelle (Coker) and his second wife of 24 years Louise Marie (Weiner). Survived by son, Robert Alan and daughter, Gina Marie Allbaugh; grandchildren, Andrew Lloyd Mullins and Taylor Gaynelle Allbaugh; brothers, Ira (Earlene) Mullins and Forester Mullins; sisters, Opal (Bruce) Wright, Shirley Mondridge, Ruby (Bob) Sparks; numerous nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death by brother Oscar and sister Betty. Gene served in the U.S. Air Force and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and The National Defense Service Medal. He was a long time member of VFW #495. Gene was a carpenter and retired in the early 1990's. He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and spending time with his family, friends and his loyal grand dogs Daisy, Bruiser and Blondie whom laid by his side when the Lord called him home on August 11, 2008. Euel Ratliff, age 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Aug. 8, 2008 in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness. He was born March 4, 1931, in Pikeville, Ky., a son of the late William D. and Causby Mullins Ratliff. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and Daniel Ratliff. He was co-owner of A & E Ratliff Heating and Cooling. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. He was an ordained minister and a member of Little Jewell Old Regular Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Tony Ratliff of Ashland, KY; a daughter, Linda Cathey of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; sisters, Pansy Gibson of Marion, Ohio, and Esther Jeanelle Sturgill of Colorado; and two grandsons, Mitchell and Matthew Cathey of Elk Grove Village. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland and will be officiated by Brother Terry Bryant, Brother Junior Ruggles and Brother Milburn Slone.
