Some researcher say he may have been a Melungeon.
In 1850 Federal Census of Pike County, Kentucky Hannah Osborne is found living with her granddaughter Mary (Osborne) and grandson-in-law John McCowan. Her age is reported as being 84 yrs. and b. in Virginia
