"Cal" Higgins Was Guns Expert

Longtime city resident restored rare firearms
by Carlos Salazar Staff Reporter

Calvin O "Cal" Higgins of Albuquerque was a firearms expert who gained national acclaim in restoring and reproducing rare guns, family members say. "He was a perfectionist" said his son, Charles. "In recent years he'd make muskets and muzzle loaders for collectors, in addition to many other specialty types of guns. He'd do all the engraving, including woodchecking by hand. He also applied 10 or more layers of hand-rubbed oil to the stocks to make them stand out. "He wasn't a collector, but he loved to attend gun shows where he swapped pieces and talked to his many friends."

Higgins, 67, died of cancer Monday at his home. The funeral was held Thursday at Central Methodist Church.

His son said Higgins also participated with rescue crews who recovered bodies and discovered the wreckage of a TWA passenger plane that took off from the Albuquerque Airport and crashed into the Sandia Mountains in the 1950's.

Higgins was born in Florence, Colorado, and moved to Albuquerque when he was 10. He attended Lew Wallace Elementary School and Lincoln Junior High School. Family members say he joined the Air Corps as a firearms expert upon his graduation from Albuquerque High in 1944.

"He started working on guns when he was 11 years old" said his widow, Betty. "He worked at Krause Gunshop Downtown, 305 Iron Ave SE, while he was going to school. After the war, he went back to work at Krause, then purchased the business in 1954. He moved it to the corner of Menaul Blvd and Morningside and closed it in 1967."

After closing the shop, Higgins was employed as a machinist at Spartan Southwest and in 1972 joined Kirtland Air Force Base's Research and Fabrication Shop as a machinist. He retired in 1988.

"He loved his work and he loved to go fishing and hunting," she said. He had a cabin at El Vado Lake he visited on recreation and hunting trips. She said Higgins also enjoyed working on vintage clocks and was a member of the Duke City Rifle Club, the New Mexico Collectors Association and was la life member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors, all from Albuquerque except where noted, include his wife, Betty; a son, Dr. Charles Higgins, the husband of Connie; two daughters, Linda Higgins of Rio Rancho and Dawn Higgins; two step-daughters, Alice, the wife of Stephen Wylie of Fort Sumner and Lori Sturgess; a sister, Edith, the wife of Harold Boyer, 12 grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.
