10453. Carol Jean Thompson
Carol Carter, 65, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011, with many of her family by her side, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Funeral services were held Saturday May 14, 1 p.m., at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial followed in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, Iowa, under direction of Armstrong Funeral Services of Anthon.
Carol, daughter of Fred Bennett and Norma Nettie (White) Thompson, was born June 7, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was raised on a farm northwest of Anthon, Iowa, and graduated from the Anthon-Oto High School with the Class of 1963. After high school Carol worked in Sioux City where she met Larry Carter while he was stationed at the Sioux City Air Base and they were married December 17, 1966. The couple lived in Gettysburg, South Dakota, then returned to Sioux City for several years, before moving to Des Moines where they owned and operated JC's Auto Parts. Carol was President of JC's and was also president of ACE Distributors in Sioux City for several years. Carol had a variety of jobs in the Des Moines/Ankeny area and in later years worked several part-time jobs, just to keep busy.
Carol loved to read and do crossword puzzles, but especially loved time spent with her three darling granddaughters.
Carol will be missed by her children, Cara Carter Hulick and her husband Tim, and Jimmy Carter; three granddaughters, Kailey, Morgan and Kassie Hulick; her siblings, Joan (Mrs. Mark) Meister, and Doug (Shirley) Thompson; Norm (Laura) Thompson; Steve (Sheryl) Thompson; Sandy (Mrs. Beau) Ruleaux; three aunts, Vertress Fitzpatrick; Doris Omvig, and Betty Card; plus many nieces and nephews, cousins, and special lifetime friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Fred Thompson in 2007, and her former husband, Larry Carter in 2007.
James Larry Carter, 61, died suddenly on December 14, 2007.
Larry was born in Etowah, Arkansas on April 22, 1946 to Grady and Pearl (Jackson) Carter. He was the oldest of four children; Alton (Elaine) Carter, Stephen (Debbie) Carter and Stanley Carter.
Larry served in the Air Force from 1965 to 1968, when he was honorably discharged. He went on to be a successful business owner of two companies, JC's Auto Stores in Des Moines and ACE Distributing in Sioux City. In 1991, he retired and in 1993 he moved with his wife to his dream home to live in the quiet of his 'farm' near Medora.
Larry loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren in activities such as fishing off the dock of his pond. His dream was to play catcher for the Detroit Tigers. He was invited to join their farm team upon completion of his tour of duty in the Air Force. Due to an accident while serving he was unable to realize his dream. He kept this dream alive by coaching his son's team and watching his Tigers every chance he could. For many years he raced drag cars and in recent years loved to spend time in his barn and 'tinker' with anything mechanical.
Larry is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Cindy, his step mother, Lorene Carter, his siblings, two children, Cara (Tim) Hulick, James (Jimmy) Carter, Jr., two stepchildren, Mindie (Randy) Hommer and Todd (Lisa) Mealey. His four grandchildren Kailey, Morgan, Kassie and Samantha will miss him dearly.
