William Tackett

William was listed as age 26 in the 1850 Pike County, KY., census.

Delpha "Plymale" Barclift, grandaughter of William Tackett, was often heard to tell about her mother relating the story of William's death. Her mother related that one night during the civil war, the family had just sat down to eat their evening meal, when a group of men rode up to the gate. Her father got up and went to the door to see what they wanted. He hollered that supper was on the table and he invited them to come in and join them. He remarked that he had just made a fresh batch of sorghum. The men drew their guns and shot him down, killing him on the spot for no apparent reason, then they all rode off.

An interview by JWT with Hassell Tackett, 1989, of Pikeville, KY: "In the Civil War (CSA); He (William) would stay away 2 or 3 months and then come home to see the family. The story goes that when he came home on one of these occasions, his brother-in-law, Samuel Keel, and others, rode up on horseback to his house and hollered out at him. William answered, "What do you Want?" They said, "We're goin to Mud Creek (In Floyd Co.) and we want to know which of these hollers to go up." William opened the door and they shot him five times. Nobody ever knew for sure who it was that killed old William but that's the story."

Both stories sound very similiar.

Samuel Keel was a 2d Lt, Co K, 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, USA, from Carter County, KY. He married William's sister Ferina J. Tackitt on March 8, 1866, after the war was over.
