Five Letcher Youths
Killed In Crash

Five boys, all residents of the Ulvah area, were killed instantly about 11:30 p. m. Saturday, March 26, when their car crashed into a bridge and overturned into Rockhouse Creek.

The accident occurred at the second of the "Twin Bridges" on Ky. Highway 7 near Letcher. The car caught fire after the crash.

Four of the youths were students at Letcher High School. The fifth had graduated from the school last year.

The boys were believed to be returning from a movie when the accident occurred.

Dead are: Don Crase, a junior at Letcher High School, son of James Crase. He was 16. His mother is dead.

George Dixon, 18, a senior at Letcher High, son of Orville and Mary Dixon.

Jerry Lee Caudill, 16, a senior at Letcher High and a son of James A. and Lovel Caudill.

Douglas Ison, 17, a junior at Letcher High and a son of McClellan and Imogene Ison.

Donald Halcomb, 18, a 1965 graduate of Letcher High and a son of Luther and Nora Halcomb.

The bodies of young Crase and Dixon were taken to the Moore and Craft Funeral Home.

The bodies of Caudill, Ison and Halcomb were taken to the Blair Funeral Home.

The body of Dixon will be returned to the family residence Monday morning and funeral service for him will be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements for Crase are incomplete pending arrival of a brother from Vietnam.

The bodies of Caudill, Ison and Halcomb were returned to their parents homes Sunday afternoon.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed at that time.

The accident was the second multiple death in Letcher County within three days.

On Thursday night, at about 7:40 p. m., Forester Potter and Dora Potter died of shotgun wounds at their home at Mayking near the State Highway Department garage.

The office of Sheriff Maynard Hogg said Potter apparently shot his wife and then killed himself.

Funeral services for them were held Sunday.
