Ivan Neal Potter, age 62, passed away after a short illness at the Ohio State James Hospital on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 12:40 PM. He was a farmer and a retired coal miner from Southern Ohio Coal. He was born on November 30, 1953 in Jackhorn Kentucky to Janice (Tolliver) Potter and the late Owen Potter. He graduated from Crooksville High School in 1972. He was a member of Pyro Church of Christ, in Jackson Co. He was also a member of the Jackson Co. Cattleman’s Association and the Ohio Farmer’s Club.
Right Worshipful Brother, Ivan was a 32 degree Mason, a past master of the Portland Lodge #366 and an honorary member of many other lodges. He was a past District Education Officer and past District Deputy Grand Master of the magnificent 12th Masonic District. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus and Valley of Gallipolis. He was married to Carol (Canter) Potter on August 25, 1972, to this union they were born two sons, Ryan and Brandon Potter. He is preceded in death by his father, Owen Potter, his beloved son, Ryan and mother and father-in-law, James and Evelene Swann Canter.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Brandon; grandsons, Eli and Evan Potter; daughter-in-law, Becki Snyder; brothers and sisters, Allen (Connie) Potter, Clyde (Ruthie) Potter, Diana (Jim) Sims, Greg (Carla) Potter, Loretta “Carol” Potter, Rhonda (Danny) Butler; special nieces and nephews, Breanna and Taylor Butler and Valerie Hubbard. He is also survived by a host of Masonic brothers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joan and Lisle Dill, Jack and Cindy Adkins and Jerry Canter; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill with Pastor Bob Fellure officiating. Burial will follow in C.M. Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, January 20, 2016 from 2-8 PM at the funeral home. A masonic service will be performed at 7 PM. Obituary Owen Potter: Owen Potter, age 81, of Oak Hill went to rest in paradise Monday, June 17, 2013 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus (Ohio) after a brief illness. Owen was born March 20, 1932 in Jackhorn , KY to the late William Sherman and Augie (Reynolds) Potter. He was a member of the Pyro Church of Christ. Owen began serving the Lord at the age of 17. Owen retired from the Southern Ohio Coal Company March 20, 1994. He was a 53-year member of the United Mine Workers of America. He also worked at the Ford Motor Co. in Cleveland and the logging industry in Jackson County. He was married to Janice (Tolliver) in Jackhorn , KY on November 18, 1950. Into this loving union was born seven
children, Allen (Connie) Potter, Ivan (Carol) Potter, Clyde (Ruthie) Potter, Diana (Jim) Sims, Greg (Carla) Potter and Carol Potter, all of Oak Hill, OH, and Rhonda (Danny) Butler of Jackson; grandchildren, Kim Kidd, Paula McClary, Amy Potter, Allen Wayne Potter Jr., Ryan and Brandon Potter, Jared and Jordan Potter, Grant Lloyd, Bradley and Carley Potter, Taylor and Breanna Butler; great-grandchildren, Bobby, Ashley, Nathan and Austin Kidd, Dakota Smith, Kayden Leck, Grace and Sullivan (lil O) Potter, Eli and Evan Potter and Aidan Lloyd; sisters-in-law, Joyce Vicki Potter (who was more like a sister) and Emma Miller; brother-in-law, J.E. (Sue) Tolliver; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Along with parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Odeen, Clyde, Jimmy and Irvin; sisters, Dorothy and Mattie; as well as sister-in-law, Martha (Strange) Potter. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Lewis-Gillum Funeral Home in Oak Hill with
Minister Joe Fox of Beattyville, KY officiating. His final resting place will be at C.M. Cemetery in Oak Hill. Friends can call from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Owen wished for donations to be given to help children through the St. Jude’s Children Hospital and “Growing Oaks” Food Program at Oak Hill Elementary. He never met a stranger and loved to watch sports, especially when his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were involved. He was a big supporter and encouraged every child to obtain as much education as possible. Most importantly, he wanted to talk to people about the Lord. Ryan Neal Potter, 38, Oak Hill, passed away unexpectedly July 20, 2013, at Cabell - Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV. He was born May 2, 1975, in Gallipolis, Ohio to Ivan and Carol (Canter) Potter, who survive. He is also survived by a brother, Brandon Potter of Oak Hill. He is also survived by two nephews, Eli and Evan Potter that he loved like they were his own; grandmother, Janice Potter; and aunts and uncles Joan and Lisle Dill, Cindy and Jack Adkins, Jerry Canter, Allen and Connie Potter, Clyde and Ruthie Potter, Diana and Jim Sims, Greg and Carla Potter, Carol Potter, all from Oak Hill, and Rhonda and Danny Butler of Jackson; several first cousins: Stephanie Schulte, Marcia Schaefer, Kenny Canter, Scott Canter, Valerie Hubbard, Amy Potter, Allen Potter, Jr., Kim Kidd, Paula McClary, Jared Potter, Jordan Potter, Grant Lloyd, Bradley Potter, Carley Potter, Taylor Butler, and Breanna Butler; great-aunts and uncles Joyce Potter, James and Sue Tolliver, and Bob and Mary Swann; very special and close friends Andrea and Jeff Heft; special sister-in-law of 11 years, Becky Adkins Snyder; several additional cousins and a host of close friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Evelene and Jim Canter and paternal grandfather, Owen Potter.
Ryan was a 1993 graduate of Oak Hill High School and attended Hocking Technical College. He was the administrator for Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a member of Portland Lodge 366 and served as a Past Master. He enjoyed working as a disc jockey, fondly known as P-Funk; was an avid fan of the Lady Oaks and Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals basketball teams, and loved attending and camping at dirt track races. He loved children, especially his nephews Eli and Evan, and lived life to the fullest.
Friends may call at Lewis-Gillum Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Wednesday, July 24 from 2 to 7:30 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral services, which will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 1 p.m. Pastor Bob Jones will officiate. Burial and interment will be at CM Cemetery. A Masonic service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a college fund for Elijah and Evan Potter, at the Milton Banking Company, c/o of Brandon Potter.
