Obituary of General Washington "G W" Profitt:
Died at his home on Lacey Creek, Wolfe Co KY Dec. 6th, 1887, G. W. Profitt,
in the 34th year of his age.
"For whom the Lord loveth, He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He
receiveth."
About three years before death there appeared in the right eye of the
deceased a growth which pronounced sciclomer (sic) by the physicians, and Dr.
Stuckey and others removed the eye. After this he improved in health, and was
able to attend the avocations of life for some six months. But, that the
scriptures might be fulfilled, scorfula then developed in his right arm and left
leg, and he was subsequently covered with sores that baffled the skill of all
the physicians. His afflictions were like those of Job, and to his memory let us
add that his faith was akin to that of Job also.
From the inception of his affliction until the spark of life disappeared, he
bore his trials with patience and forbearance in the firm faith that God had
marked him for his own. Indeed, upon one occasion, in 1873, he told his mother
that he had the assurance that he had been adopted into the heavenly home and he
would be rewarded, even as a joint heir with Christ. The spirit bearing witness
with his spirit told him that he should reach the heavenly Throne and have a
seat at the right hand of God.
God is love and we can not doubt that the deceased was of God, although not
identified with any church denomination. After he was convinced that he was one
of the elect, he would have taken membership with the Regular Baptist, of which
his mother and father and a brother and two sisters were consistent members, but
afflictions prevented him from doing so, and he resigned himself to God's will.
"God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son that whosoever
believeth on Him might not perish but have everlasting life," was a comforting
assurance to him that when he left this vale of tears, life for him would be
full of pleasures that he might enjoy through eternity.
He was permitted the eye of faith to look through the windows of heaven into the
beautiful gallery of God; for though he was struggling in the agonies of death,
he replied in a pleasing voice that he saw wreaths of the most beautiful flowers
he had ever beheld. And only a few moments before he breathed his last expiring
breath, he uttered in a tone almost too low to be heard that he saw his Savior
coming.
His remains were laid to rest by loving relatives and friends in a modest mound
where the sun kisses the dew drop and dries the earth, bidding the loved ones he
left behind to dry their tears and follow him to that heavenly home where
his soul soars on high.
The deceased leaves behind a loving wife and five little children entrusted to
her care, one daughter married, a kind father and mother, brothers and sisters
and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
Mother, father, brothers, sisters, he bids you come to him and awaits your
coming that you, too may enjoy God's kingdom.
G.H.L.
