Andrew enlisted in the Confederate Army on 17 May 1861. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. He was imprisoned at Davids Island, NY between 17 July and 24 July 1863. Eventually he was part of an exchange of prisoner agreement and he served again in the Confederate Army after the exchange.
