(Source: Michael Bowen - mbowen@umich.net): Owen "Odey" Roberts was born in Shelby Creek area of Pike Co, KY and lived there until he married Delila CAUDILL, then the young couple lived near Abner CAUDILL in south Floyd Co, at Melvin, land on Hen Pen Creek, until the Civil War. They were burned out and lost all of their belongings in KY to renegades about 1863, they then "stayed around" with relatives until they settled in Wyoming Co, WV. Most of Owen's brothers and sisters were already in that area of WV prior to 1850.

Mrs. TACKETT at Melvin, KY. said that the Roberts' were "fightin men". Owen "Odey" Roberts reputedly whipped 5 men that had come to kill him, and then jumped up on the rail fence and crowed like a rooster. Clyde ROBERTS of Panther, WV said that Odey fought so much, and was so strong that taverns would get quiet when he entered. Mrs. Vicey (Stacy) CLINE, said "Your great grandfather, Odey ROBERTS, according to legend, whipped nine men with a cross cut saw on Panther Creek, WV" Aunt Clara said, "The Roberts' were so tough, you had to knock them in the head at Judgment Day.

My family said that Owen's 2nd wife was a young woman named Nancy Unknown, and that she had 1 daughter named Sally, but the mother (Nancy) died, and Sally died of T.B. at age 17. The fact appears to be that his 2nd wife was this Tempy HALL, widow of Alfred. Family said that Odey treated this wife badly and also treated Tazy BAILEY (3rd wf) badley. Could have been another wife named Nancy ? ?. In 1870 McDowell Co (WV) census some of the younger children by 1st wife were living with a Nella ROBERTS age 25, and Owen was in H/H with Tempa (Tempy Hall).
