The Following notes all come from Jeanne Dobbs: 1900 census had birth date as Mar 1848 January 24, 1917, Ira and Amanda Roberts along with Stephen and Ruthy Hankins, sold 120 acres of their land to William Jenkins and Henry Roberts for $80. The land was Amanda and Ruthy's land from their father Henry M. Ford. Headstone says Ira H. Roberts March 13, 1846 --- October 24, 1935,Veteran of Civil War. He is buried beside Elizabeth Jenkins. She does not have a headstone. Ira Henry served in the Civil War with Co. B, 7th Battalion, Confederate Cavalry. He previously served in Co. D, French's Battalion, Virginia Inf. He was taken POW at Piketon, KY April 15, 1863 and sent to Louisville, KY on April 19, 1863 he was sent to camp Chase, Ohio, and then exchanged at City Point VA on May 13, 1863. Union Army description: 5' 5", hazel eyes, black hair, dark complexion, age 16, farm hand. He served with Raleigh Duncan Roberts, his nephew. Ira, by all accounts was a tough, brave and strong man. He was reported to be able to lift a 100 pound sack of grain with his teeth and throw it over his shoulder and walk away. He could do this well into his seventies. He was reported to be the principal Shooter in the battle of Critical Fork, and was the only one brought to trial. (He was acquitted after spending a small fortune.) He had been in combat and was deadly with a weapon; He was over 60 when he married Amanda Ford she was 21. He Fathered four children with her and provided well into his 80's for his family. Near his death in 1935, at his house on Caney Creek, MO, his second wife "Mandy" got mad at him and took the children and walked away leaving him in bed. He was crippled from diabetes and unable to walk. He soon realized she was not coming back and that he was facing his death. He managed to crawl out on the porch to the water bucket. Knowing he would starve or freeze to death if he didn't get some help, he started down the creek toward his son William Jesse's place. As he crawled along, his cattle noticed the strange sight and decided he was some sort of evil and set about trying to trample him. Lucky for him his hunting dog came to his rescue and drove the cattle away. He crawled along the creek bed, about a mile, and forded the creek finally getting into shouting range of William Jesse and Mary's' place. The children heard his cries and found him. The family dried him, warmed him and put him in bed. He remained there until he died some months later. Thelma Roberts/Hankins related this story to me. She said she helped attend to him as a girl. Roy Roberts, Jr. Published in the Taney Co Republican Newspaper: Feb 6, 1896 Johnson School district News- Ira Roberts was baptized in Caney Creek last Sunday by R. B. Stafford, though the weather was cold and chilly. Middle name was either Hampton or Henry. My close family members say it was Hampton.
