Daniel Henry "Squire Dan" Short was the first man to establish a blacksmith shop in Wise Co VA. The shop was a one room log structure on North Fork of Pound built about 1845. Daniel Henry "Squire Dan" Short was elected Justice of the Peace and helped organize the new county of Wise in 1856.
