Queentina Amburgey. Wilson Short was born in Wise County, VA. He migrated to
Carr Creek in Knott Co., KY and raised his family there. He acquired extensive
tracts of land on Carr and Caney Creek. He later sold some of the land on
Caney to Milton Owens. Wilson served as a Private in the 10th Infantry of the
Confederate Army from June 21, 1864 to June 21, 1865 during the Civil War. He
died at his home on February 11, 1912 as a result of gastritis. Children of Wilson Eslin

SHORT – Mr. Earnest, passed away Sunday, October 29, 1961 in his 37th year;
family residence, 11300 Preston Highway. Loving husband of Mrs. Mary Kathleen
(Mattingly) Short; beloved son of Mrs. Ritter Short; step-father of Howard
Allen of Nashville, Tenn.; brother of Mrs. Lona Evering, Mrs. Verna Moore and
Mrs. Beneda Childers, Mr. Jim Short and Auburn Short, all of Hyman [sic], Ky.,
Mrs. Edna Fugate, Mrs. Dallas Dixon and Mr. Marvie Short, the latter from
Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Short is at the Arch L. Heady Southern Funeral Home, 3601
Taylor Blvd., where services will be conducted Wednesday, November 1st at
10:00 a.m. Interment Eastern Cemetery.
At the time of his death, my Uncle Ernie and Aunt Kathleen lived in a trailer
on my family’s property, which was just inside the Bullitt Co. line, just
south of Louisville. His family was from Hindman.
My Aunt Kathleen’s first marriage was to Earnest Short. I don’t recall the
marriage date, but it was likely in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Her son
Howard was born when she was an unmarried teen and he took his father’s last
name. Mary Kathleen Mattingly was born 1 Jul 1922 at Knottsville, Daviess Co.,
KY. She was the daughter of William Garland Mattingly (29 Jan 1896 – 29
Jun 1980) and his wife, Bessie Mae Roby Mattingly (6 Jan 1891 – 31 Jan 1926).
After Earnest Short died she married to Joseph Goode. Aunt Kathleen died at
Louisville, KY on 22 Aug 1965 of cancer. Source: Personal knowledge.
