Lewis Sowards was a Captain in the Civil
War (Union side). He was enrolled 13 September 1862. mustered in 16
February 1863 at Peach Orchard, KY. He resigned 17 November 1864 from
the roll of Company E, 39th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Also, his five
sons were in the Union Army. Lewis build the first brick building in
Pikeville. He voted Republican 3 November 1868 and served as Sheriff to
collect votes. From this election down to present time most of the
Sowards and their descendants vote Republican. (This information was
