Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evans

Flemming Stafford b about 1814 KY d 27 Mar 1901 Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY; s/o John Stafford and Nancy Runyon. Flemming Stafford m. 22 Aug 1841 Pike Co KY to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evans b about 1822 KY. Fleming enlisted with the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry and was mustered into the service on 15 Jan., 1863, at Piketon. He was nearly 50 years of age. He was in The Battle of Turman's Ferry and was one of the men mentioned who suffered frostbite from exposure. Fleming was admitted to the Regimental Hospital on 25 November, 1863, with Chronic Rheumatism according to the Surgeon General’s report and was discharged on 15 Feb., 1864, at Catlettsburg in Boyd Co., KY, due to disability. His pension papers describe him as 6’ tall, fair complexion, light or gray hair, and blue eyes. Children of Flemming Stafford and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evans;

John Ferrell Stafford b 24 Aug 1844 Pike Co KY d 11 Dec 1926 Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY; buried 13 Dec 1926 Catlettsburg Cemetery, Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY; had a brief romance about 1864 with Katherine Wallace; d/o Solomon Wallace and Lucy Daniels. John Ferrell STAFFORD enlisted with the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry on 28 Jan 1863 at Peach Orchard and served under Capt. William KING. In November 1864 at Marion, Virginia, John took ill and in the Winter of 1864 when the troops were marching through Bean Station, Tennessee, he contracted Rheumatism brought on by exposure to the cold weather. He was Honorably Discharged at Louisville, KY on 15 September 1865. His pension papers describe him as being 5ft 4in. tall, fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. Sometime during 1864, John met Katherine WALLACE (daughter of Pvt. Solomon WALLACE of Co. G 39th KY Mounted Infantry, and Lucinda DANIELS). They had a brief romance which resulted in the birth of one child, my Great-Grandfather: Child of John Ferrell Stafford and Katherine Wallace;

John Ferrell Stafford m. 19 Nov 1925 Boyd Co KY (at age 81) to Malissa  Unknown STAMPER, (Malissa Unknown Stamper had been divorced from her first husband about 1903 in Grayson Carter Co KY).

John Ferrell Stafford was a farmer, but at some point during his life, he worked as a US Mail Carrier in Ceredo, Wayne Co WV. After John died, his widow, Malissa Unknown Stamper - Stafford, applied for John’s accrued pension on 25 Jan 1927.

Elizabeth "Peggy" Hardy-Artrip

Flemming Stafford b about 1814 KY d 27 Mar 1901 Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY age 87 years; s/o John Stafford and Nancy Runyon. Flemming Stafford m. 22 Dec 1885 Lawrence Co KY at age 62 to Elizabeth "Peggy" Hardy-Artrip (widow of Jackson Artrip) b Aug 1827 NC. They had no children.

Elizabeth HARDY-ARTRIP applied for Fleming’s pension. The pension file is approximately 41 pages long and includes a “Special Investigation” into the circumstances of Fleming’s death. One of Fleming’s daughters, Sophie STAFFORD-WELLMAN, accused their step-mother of having poisoned their father to death. It was never determined from the pension papers whether or not the daughter’s claim was proven to be true.
