Moses Tolliver and Hilliar ROUSSEAU posted a "bastardy bond" for the child on June 6, 1780. This required them to reimburse the county should it incur any expenses in supporting the child. Wilkes Co. court records indicate that Lucy ROBINS died in 1787 and her daughter Elizabeth was "bound out" to Thomas ROBINS till age 18 to learn to spin, read, and write. (See Jesse Tolliver). Child of Jesse Tolliver and Lucy Robins;

Notes for JONATHAN BROOKS STAMPER, SENIOR:

The Stampers owned land in Montgomery Co. VA. In a book by Fothergill "List of Montgomery Co. VA Taxpayers 1762-1782" Isaac, James, Jonathan Sr. and Jr. and Powell Stamper are listed as paying taxes in Montgomery Co.

He is Amherst Co. Va in 1763. From that county Deed Book 1763, page 103 March 7 1763 Jonathan Stamper bought 200 acres of land for 40 pounds from John Freeman and wife Abigale, on Stone House Creek, Virginia.

In 1767 Jonathan sold the land in Amherst Co. and settled on Bugaboo Creek about 2 miles from present town of Ronda, NC. (Wilkes Co. NC)

One source says they came to Greensboro, NC about 1760, but above deeds do not reflect that. Jonathan witnessed a deed for John Parks in 1772 when it was still Surry Co. NC. (now Wilkes)

He and his wife were frugal and industrious, accumulating considerable property. They were known to possess money.

In their old age they were attacked by three men, Cox, Bledsoe and Hart who tied Jonathan to an apple tree and proceeded to ransack the house in their quest for gold that was said to be hidden in their home. The assault and attempted robbery so shocked Mrs. Stamper that she died--the result of heart failure. The robbers escaped. The strange part of the story is that there was hidden in a barrel $700 in gold that was so protected by a false bottom and wrapped in rags and the top filled with beans, the loose coins made no noise and the robbers didn't find them.

From Attorney Will Daniels, Huntington WV., a great grandson of Joshua Stamper, dated May 30 1938 and copies by Leonis Jones 8 July 1967.

Wilkes County NC Entry 130, 8 May 1778 Jonathan Stamper Sr. entered 300 acres on Bugaboo Creek nearly against the old Mill to Canaday's line including Jonathan, Jr.'s improvements.

Entry 798, 6 Feb. 1779 Jonathan Stamper entered 250 acres on little Bugaboo Creek joined by Richard Allen's land.

Jonathan Stamper 300 acres of land and no polls 1797

Jonathan Sr. and Jr. sold their land at Bugaboo Creek and moved to the upper Roaring River area in the 1780's.

In 1772 Jonathan Sr. served as Constable in the King's Service in Surry, Parish of St. Jude. In 1778 he was granted license to keep an ordinary (tavern) in his dwelling house with Richard Allen and Benjamin Cleveland as securities.

He was a patriot in the Revolutionary War, furnishing horses and provisions for the Continental Army. His sons served in the Revolution.
