Melissa had many different spellings of her name.
They include: Molessath, Molissa, Molissath, Melissa, Mallissa - Marriage book,
& Melisse - Death Cert. The Monroe brothers credit their mother
Malissa Vandiver as being the
origin for their musical talent. Family sources say that J. B. was a good square
dancer, serious, stern, and hardworking; Melissa was a musician, easygoing,
lighthearted and jovial. Malissa played accordion and fiddle. One time a local
dance was to be held but the regular fiddler didn't show. The dance organizer
borrowed a horse and rode to the Monroe farm and asked J.B., "We thought we was
going to have a dance.. but the fiddler didn't show. I wonder if we could borrow
Malissa." J.B. agreed, and Malissa got her fiddle. "You never heard such
fiddling. Just sawed to death. Stood upright - wouldn't sit down - just stood
up, and she was a tall woman, and she stood up... and just put the music right
in your feet," said Charlie Monroe. They were married by a W.M. Pharis. 1920

John Henry Vandiver was born on 27 Feb 1847
McLean Co. KY. He resided in 1880 in McLean Co., Kentucky. He died on 20 Apr
1900 in McLean Co., Kentucky. He was buried on 22 Apr 1900. Cemetery West of
Mulberry St., in Livermore. John Henry was described as a large stocky man. He
farmed but also cut timber. He would buy the lumber off a tract of land, cut it,
and sell it to a mill. He was a practical joker and enjoyed a good laugh.
There is no record of John Henry or his father in 1850 he would have been two.
It is thought that after his mother, Martha Beales, died, that Joseph and John
Henry stayed with the Beales or other relatives. At this time we don't know
where they resided. In 1860 Census, he was a lad of twelve living with Joseph
and his stepmother Minerva in Ohio Co. In this census he did not attend school.
A genealogist working family records in The South, at the time peroid following
the reconstruction, ran across a John Henry Vandever, a local politician there.
At one time it was thought that this John H. Vandiver may be our John Henry
Vandiver, the eldest son of Joseph M. Vandiver.
He (Joseph M "Dutch" Vandiver) served in the
military between 1863 and 1864 in Ohio Co., Kentucky. Joseph appeared on the
1863 & 1864 personnel lists for the 87th Kentucky Regiment of Enrolled Militia,
Col. W.H. Porter, Commanding. He was Plaintiff in suit against Newport News &
Mississippi Valley RR on 11 Jan 1889 in Ohio Co., Kentucky. for $40 in damages
from loss by killing a cow. Court ruled in favor of plaintiff in amount of $35
plus 6% interest until paid. He was injured by Illinois Central RR on 9 Apr 1905
in Ohio Co., Kentucky. As Joe was attempting to cross railroad to passenger
platform, the trains engine and cars "ran against" him inflicting injuries
resulting in his death 9 days later on 18 Apr 1905. He died on 18 Apr 1905 in
Ohio Co., Kentucky.(889) (890) In his later years Joseph became nearly blind. It
was reported that he walked into a train - Moving ? He was hit by a train in
White Run, Ohio Co., Ky. He was badly injuried and died in Rosine 9 days later.
His son Levi was executor of the estate. Levi sued the Illinois Central Railroad
for $2000 but settled out of court for $100. He was buried in Ohio Co.,
Kentucky. Joseph may be buried in the Rosine Cemetery where his son, Pen
Vandiver is. 1900 Census; Butler Co., ed30 s14 l14 lists a Joseph Vandiver (b
Jul 1825) with Robert J. Dockery
1900 Census; Ohio Co., ed31 s2 l45 lists a Joseph Vandiver (father, b 1827,
Illinois) living with Will Vandiver. Will is the father of Arthur Vandiver, my
Grandfather - LA Warren
From the two Census Records above it appears that Joseph moved around
frequently, certainly ahead of the County Census Enumerator. It also appears
that his birthdate moved around as well. My Grandfather, Arthur Vandiver, was
known as a prankster and lived next farm to his Grandfather Joseph. -- LA Warren
From relatives and descendants of the Joseph Vandiver & Martha Beals. They have
it that Joseph had a temper. They recall that John Henry & Owen were both to
make statements to that effect. One story had it that one of Joseph's calf or
colt got it's neck caught in a fence. Loosing his temper in trying to extricate
the animal, he ended up breaking the animal's neck in impatience.
