Written by Martha June Edwards "Short" about her biological father, Cowan Edwards; He (Cowan Edwards) served in World War I and was overseas when I (daughter, Martha June Edwards "Short") was born. My mother never said anything bad about him. The only time I remember seeing him I was about ten years old and if he recognized me he didn't show it. We lived with my grandfather and grandmother [Daniel and Sarah Brummitt Short] until my mother married Randolph "Ran" Vanover. My brother, Erman, was born June 6, 1922, in Clintwood, Virginia. He attended Burdine and Jenkins Schools and served in World War II and the Korean War. He married Louise Lambert first and his second wife is Priscilla Wyatt My birth certificate says Martha June Edwards but I've always been June Short. On October 10, 1941, I married Harry Clifton Martin." (December 1, 1993.)

Erman Short served 21 years in the United States Army. He enlisted in 1940 and served in Iceland along with some friends from Jenkins, including Buddy Nolan, Ed Mullins and Paul Howington. During World War II he served in England and was assigned to the 1st Allied Airborne. On 7 June 1944, D-Day plus 1, Erman's unit landed in Holland and served there and in Belgium. He was assigned to a construction battalion with the mission to build airfields as soon as the area was liberated from German occupation. In 1945 he returned to the States on points and was later discharged. Erman enlisted again in 1948 and served until retirement in January 1964. He served in Korea from August 1951 until September 1952 as a Military Policeman. After retirement from the Army, Erman went to work as a coal miner and is now retired from that occupation. George Wyatt, father of Priscilla, Erman's wife, was a Cherokee Indian living in North Carolina. In 1936, George moved to California where his two daughters, Priscilla and Patricia Wyatt were born. Patricia was married to Erman's older son, John Carson, at one time.
