Beatrice "Aunt Bea" Morgan Mangum said she can
only recall seeing her "Granddaddy Morgan" in his coffin. The coffin was
made at his home and lined with white silk. His corpse was placed in a
bedroom atop 4 kitchen chairs. A wake was held and she can recall "much
laughing, talking, smoking, and drinking". In the same room was a large bed
where all of the young children were put to bed that night. Later, Bea says
she remembers waking up during the night and seeing "a fireball flying
through the room". She recalls be told there was a thunderstorm during the
night and that lightning has struck a tree next the house, caught on fire,
and limb or bough had fallen through the window. She remembers his coffin
being carried up the hill to the cemetery and the family and friends
singing "Amazing Grace". Reva Ison told me she always referred to her father
as "Poppy". Her bible lists D.I.'s birthday as 10 May 1876 rather than the
19th., which I obtained from unknown source.
