The family is documented in Mitchel Hall, "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County and Genealogy of Its People up to the Year 1927," (1928), p 658.
A family legend is that Samuel Williams and his three sons were held in a Rebel prison previous to their forced entrance into the ConfederateArmy. Preston C. Williams escaped before he was mustered into the army.
SAMUEL WILLIAMS - limited information available. Family tradition has been he died while in a Confederate prison. However, according to a publication entitled "Johnson County, Kentucky" by Mitchel Hall, Samuel Williams and his familyrelocated from Scott County, Virginia to Johnson County, Kentucky and Samuel, who was born in 1811 in Scott
County, died in Johnson County in 1877. Samuel's wife was Katherine Kimbler Williams, also from Virginia. Don, When I try to check the Union military records, there are so many Samuel Williams and the information is so sketchy that it is impossible to tell if any of them might have been from Scott County. I think what we'll have to go with is the Johnson County, Kentucky publication. If the publication is correct, Samuel wasn't the one who died in a Confederate prison.

Civil War: Union Army, MARTIN WILLIAMS, COMPANY C, 15TH KENTUCKY
CAVALRY
Rial Martin Williams, age 45, appears on the muster rolls as a private
in January and February 1863. His military record is very poorly
documented. In the remarks section of his record is thestatement,
furnished horse and equipment from November 30, 1862 to October 29,
1863. It is unclear when he actually joined the 15th. However, from
the regimental record , we know that apparently Private Williams was
with Company C from the time the regiment was organized in November
1862 until the regiment mustered out on October 29, 1863. The 15th
was recruited as their services were needed to defend against the
guerrilla bands that roamed throughoutKentucky during this time.
These lawless groups made the presence of a largearmed force
necessary and the 15th operated mainly by companies and detachments
over a large area of the State.
Private Williams, the son of James R. C.Williams and Temperance Lane
Williams, of Scott County, Virginia, married Matilda Lark, probably in
the mid 1840s. They had eleven known children: Thomas Patton, Elijah
William, Alcey, James E., Helen E., Sarah A., Margaret E., Rial Martin
Jr., Lewis Jackson, Matilda, and William Milburn.
After he was mustered out, Private Williams returned to his wife and
family in Scott County. He and his family were living in the
Estillville District in the late 1800s, but the date of his death and
place of burial is unknown.
Note: By the endof the war, the 15th Regiment had lost 1 officer and
2 enlisted men to battle wounds and 1 officer and 54 enlisted men by
disease. Total 58 men. (from Barnett McConnell, 10/2003)
15th Regiment Cavalry
Organized at Owensborough, Ky., October, 1862. Ordered to Paducah,
Ky., October, 1862. Attached to District of Columbus, Dept. of the
Tennessee, to November. 1862. District of Columbus, Ky., 13th Army
Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to January, 1863. Districtof Columbus,
Ky., 16th Army Corps, to August, 1863. Detached Brigade, District of
Columbus, Ky., 6th Division, 16th Army Corps, to October, 1863.
From reviewing information from a couple of different sources, it
appears that Company C was based in the Paducah area and operated from
there over a large section of the State. When the 15th was recruited
and during their entire term ofservice, Kentucky was overrun by
guerrilla bands that roamed around doing allthey could to hurt the
Union cause. These lawless bands made the need
for alarge force necessary and apparently C Company spent much of
their time pursuing these gangs. (from Barnett McConnell, 10/2003)
There was some uncertaintyas to whether the Martin Williams was Rial
Martin Williams. Just wanted to say that the piece of furniture I have
that is from T.P. Williams home-place was signed by Martin Williams in
pencil on the sub-structure, under the paint.I have always presumed
it was built by Rial Martin Williams. I think that his signature as
Martin Williams probably indicates that he did go by the nameMartin
sometimes. When Rial Martin Williams died, T.P. Williams inherited the
upper half and someone else in the family got the bottom half. Wish I
hadit. I've thought that the younger Rial Martin Williams at Daniel
Boone Community might have gotten it. By now it is gracing someone's
home or even perhapsthrown away or sold at some estate auction. (fro

In 1850 census, also had Hammonds - William (16), Melissa J. (13),
Mahala (5), Martha (3). Are these brothers & sistersof Catherine.
Also had Polly Bowens (40, KY). Census book at Kpt Library hadBowens
penciled in as Catherine's maiden name and Polly Bowens as her
mother?? Joe Adams thinks that Polly Bowens was the mother of these
children, including Catherine.
The cemetery is located in an open field just west of J.R. Stallard's
home (in 1998) in the northeastern part of the old James Williams
farm on Copper Ridge between Starnes Bluff and Hill Station. There
were 9 graves marked with funeral home markers set in concrete without
dates (WorleyJ. Moore, Bertha Moore, John Williams, Catherine
Williams, Alton Moore, Lucitte Moore, Coy Fields, Claude Fields, Alton
Fields.) J.R. Stallard said that someone came from Calif a few years
ago and placed the markers. Before that, he did not know the graves
were there.
Did his middle name Loars come from his grandmother? Perhaps James
Williams' mother was a Loars from MD.

(from letter from John Fred Williams to Mrs Elnora Williams,
3/11/1969)
I spent a little time at the State Archives today and searched for
James Williams. I was unable to tie the TN Union soldiers listed as
James Williams (checked 18 of them) to Rial Martin's brother. Most of
them that had their age and birth place listed, were either to young
or were born in TN. I did not have time to checkthe ones who joined
in KY, but will try to check them out later. As you can imagine, there
are a lot of men named James Williams in the KY regiments also.
There was a James Williams that had very little information in the
Tennessee record. No age was listed and no birth place was given. This
particular James Williams enrolled at New Market (near Jefferson City)
on October 27, 1864and mustered in at Knoxville on March 13 or 23,
1865 (difficult to read the date) in K Company of the 13th TN Cavalry.
He was shown as "left sick at Pleasant Gardens, NC" (just east of
Ashville) and no date was given as when they left him sick and he was
not shown on muster out roll. He very well may have died. No way of
knowing if this could have been our Scott County James.
FromBarnett McConnell, 11/2003.
A family legend is that Samuel Williams and his three boys were taken
as prisoners by the Rebels during the Civil War and heldin a camp in
Kingsport Tenn. Preston Camel escaped and went back to Gate cityto
his wife Winnie Lark Williams. Samuel and Martin Asbury were then
forced into the war but William Preston died in that camp. Meanwhile
Preston Camel was hiding in a cave on Copper ridge (Scott Co, Gate
City). (from Rial Bradford Williams)
Since the three sons have been accounted for by Barnett McConnell's
research, I wonder if it was James Williams Jr who died in the CSA
prison and that he was captured with Samuel and his sons? Family
stories say that James Jr moved to Sullivan Co, TN, and was not heard
of again. The marriagerecord for his son, George W. Williams (b.
1862) shows his birthplace as Sullivan Co, so that fits. I have not
been able to find a record for CSA servicefor James Williams Jr. The
big question was why he moved to Sullivan Co - could he have gone
there to join a Union Army company?
