Descendants of Arthur Buchanan

Notes

6. Mary "Polly" Buchanan

Date of birth is based on her age of 42 years, 4 months, 1 day; per the Wise County Death Register.

19. Martha A. Buchanan

Martha seems to be the daughter of Polly Buchanan, but I'm not certain she's the daughter of James. Note that in 1850 Martha and Polly were living with Polly's parents, and that James would have been about 14 years old when Martha was born. Did Polly bear this child by her much younger cousin before they were married, or was Martha's father somebody else? Or did she and her young husband live separately in their parents' households?

** Where did the last four children come from? The first five are
** the children of John and Mary. The four youngest children were
** all born before the marriage of John and Hulda, but after the
** deaths of Mary Buchanan (1859) and Hulda's first husband
** Samuel Hill (about 1860). Hulda's two youngest sons by Hill
** are living with her son Berry. (See below). Hulda bore at least
** two children between 1860 and 1866: Martha M. Hill, born
** 14 July 1860 in Wise County, and a son born alive on 15 October
** 1866 in Wise County. Interestingly, the latter birth was reported
** by Hulda's "neighbor," John Buchanan. Jeannie Stafford Dobbs
** lists only one child (Noah Jackson) for John and Hulda. Steve
** Peters lists three: John M., Clarence J., and Noah H. Judy (last
** name unknown; author of database vixen on WorldConnect)
** lists five: Martha Minerva H. Hill, Amanda Hill, John Morgan Hill,
** Moses Clomance Hill, and Noah H. Buchanan. Wise County marriage
** records seem to indicate that John M. and Noah were John and
** Hulda's sons. Until I find further evidence, I'm listing the four here,
** but not Martha, as children of John and Hulda.
