MARTIN FRALEY, Private, Company H. - 50th Regiment Va. Infantry, Floyd's Brigade, enlisted at Wise Courthouse, June 3, 1861, age 33 born in Ky.. Listed in hospital and left sick at Wytheville, Virginia from July 25, 1861 through July 31, 1861. In the hospital sick at White Sulphur, West Virginia August 11, 1861. through November 1, 1861. Martin volunteered for the Confederate Army under the command of Col. Logan Salyer. At the Battle of Greenbrier,
Colonel Salyer commanded his men to lay down and fire on the enemy. To Martin he made this command 3 times.
Martin ignored all commands and he continued standing and firing until the enemy shot and killed him.
Martin was the first man in Wise County to cast a vote and he voted for the Democratic ticket. Martin was autorized by the court to keep fire in the courthouse and to keep water furnished and to maintain good order of the courthouse. For these duties he earned $12.00 for 12 months.
Martin was born in 1829 in the Ramsey section of Wise County, Va. the son of Andrew and Barbara (White) Fraley and married Mary Horne, born about 1823 in Scott County, Virginia. Martin list his birthplace as Kentucky in the 1860 Wise County census. Children of Martin and Mary (Horne) Fraley were:
