189. Thomas Elihu Hill

From Betty, Nuffy837@aol.com. She received information from thegreat-grandaughter of Wm Green Hill and Mary Hall Hill (Mary HamiltonBarnett Scott, now deceased) in a letter dated 1990:

Mary Hall, daughter of Elihu Smallwood Hall and Sophia Weston Talbot, wasborn 1810; died 1829; married William Green Hill, b.1801; d. 1860 inBrazoria Co., TX (her great-grandparents).

Mary and Wm Green's only child, Thomas Elihu Hill was born 23 May 1829 inDavidson Co (Nashville), Tenn. No death date given. ***

Ms. Scott goes on to say:

Thomas Elihu's mother died soon after his birth. His father, WilliamGreen Hill, left soon afterward for Texas and settled in BrazoriaCounty. Thomas Elihu lived in Tennessee with his grandparents (ElihuSmallwood and Sophia) and when he was 16 or 17 years of age joined hisfather in Texas where he attended Rutersville Academy. He returned toTennessee and graduated from Law School at Cumberland College, Lebanon,Tenn. He then went back to Texas, settling in Galveston, where hepracticed law and married there in 1856. In 1862-63, he was a member ofthe Texas State Legislature.
She said that Thomas Elihu and Frances Ann had eight children but onlynamed her mother, Mary Hamilton Hill, b 1864, d. 1948, married JosephBarnett. Their daughter, Mary Hamilton Barnett, b 1907; d 1996 married1st Mr. Munday; 2nd to Mr. Scott.

According to her letter, Thomas' widow, Frances and family, were livingin Galveston in 1900 when so many people were killed by the terriblestorm, but they survived it. Thomas had Gibson cousins living therethat did not.

***2004 - I have just found the name of Thomas' sister who died as a baby- she probably wasn't aware of this child.

HILL, THOMAS ELIHU (1829–1875). Thomas Elihu Hill, lawyer and statelegislator, was born on April 20, 1829, in Tennessee, son of WilliamGreen Hill and Mary Catherine (Hall) Hill. Hill and his father moved toTexas in 1830 after the death of his mother in Nashville, Tennessee, andsettled in Brazoria County. His father was a veteran of the TexasRevolution.

Hill attended school at Rutersville Academy in Fayette County, and hegraduated from Cumberland College in Lebanon, Tennessee, with a lawdegree. He married Frances Ann Sharp in Galveston in 1856. Hill served inthe Ninth and Tenth Texas legislatures from 1861 to 1864.

Thomas Hill died on May 22, 1875, in Brazoria County.

She married Charles N. Hill on March 5, 1873 in Brazoria County,. Sheoutlived her husband by 32 years and died in Corpus Christi, NuecesCounty, Texas on November 29, 1933 where she was visiting a daughter.From her obituary in the Angleton Times: " On Thanksgiving Day, she wasplaced beneath a flower covered mound beside her husband, C. N. Hill, inthe Sandy Point cemetery. She was born at Sandy Point, where she livedduring her childhood, girlhood and early married life. Later her husbandwith his family, moved to Angleton, and she placed her letter in theMethodist Church." Q. B.'s survivors included two sons, C. N. Hill ofHouston and W. G. Hill of Austin; two daughters, Mrs. E. H. Pettus ofCorpus Christi and Mrs. S. I. Stratton of Angleton; six grandchildren andone sister, Mrs. J. T. Sanders of San Antonio.

Death of Mr. W. J. Hord
Alpine Avalanche September 21, 1991(s/b 1911 - apparent transcriptionerror)

Surrounded by his grief stricken children the spirit of William JordanHord, a veteran of the "Lost Cause," and one of Alpine's most respectedcitizens passed to the Great Beyond Saturday morning, September 16th at 2o'clock. For many years Mr. Hord has been a patient sufferer and thoughat times he suffered excruciating pain he was always cheerful. For thepast two years he has realized his condition and patiently awaited theMaster's call.

Mr. Hord was born in the old town of Brazoria in 1842. At the age of 17he entered the Confederate army serving with honor to his country andcredit to himself until 1865. He was married in 1869 to Miss Crain ofCalhoun county and shortly afterward moved to Goliad county coming fromthere to Alpine in 1902. He is survived by a brother, Mr. Jesse Hord ofPresidio, a sister Mrs. H. L. Lackey of Alpine; two daughters, MesdamesWalter Garnett and Chas Stillwell, and four sons; Clarence of Alpine;Evan of Terlingua, Will of El Paso, and Ed of Wyoming; all being at hisbedside at the time of his death except Edward.

W. J. Hord was a man of broad ideas and unusually charitable toward hisfellow man. He was a christain gentlemen in every sense of the word andhis death is a loss to the community at large. The funeral services wereconducted from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Garneet Sundaymorning by his pastor, Rev. W. B. Bloys.

Thomas married Annie Hill-Graves on 25 October 1882 in Cuero, DeWittCounty, Texas, and they had FIVE children that are known of:

Bessie May Graves (1886-1934),
Annie Laurie Graves-Flick (1893-?),
Geraldine "Gabel" Graves-Lackey (1896-?),
Thomas Agustus Graves, Jr. (1891-1892), and a child who died in Infancy.
