Benjamin Franklin Johnson was in the 4th Kentucky Infantry in the Spanish American War with his brother, William Henry Johnson Horn. Ben and William were stationed at Camp Shipp, Anniston, AL. During their stay, twenty troops and a nurse died from typhoid, malaria and spinal meningitis. When his brother William died from spinal meningitis, Benjamin brought William's body back to Dorton, Pike Co KY to be buried. Benjamin became ill with either spinal meningitis or malaria but survived the disease, unlike his brother, William who died at age 22.
