Mary Gose

According to Zella Detweiler, Matilda and Rebecca are not the childrenofMary Gose, but of Mary Jane Hanson. According to her father andWiseJessee, her sources confirm that John's first wife was Mary Goseand theyindicate that they had two sons and one daughter. Thedaughter allegedlymarried a Kiser. Mary Gose may be a daughter ofStephen Gose Jr. whomarried Boedicia Jessee.

Note: One or both of these marriages may be in error.

Source: Vivian Hass, Chillicothe, MO (10/9/1996) providesinformationregarding Elizabeth Jessee, da. of Archer, who marriedFrancis Howard, which also shows a death date for both Francis andElizabeth Howard of 28May 1848. However, if that death date is wrong, and the death date of1900 for Elizabeth, da. of Archer Jessee, whomarried Will Ferguson iscorrect, Will could have been a secondmarriage.

Source: Iris L. Hall, Pueblo, CO, 1996, reports that ElizabethmarriedFrances Howard, not Will Ferguson, and moved to Indiana. Shehascorresponded with this family and they do not know of a marriage toaFerguson.

Source: Faynola Osborne indicates that this Elizabeth did not marryaWill Ferguson or Frances Howard, and was unmarried and died before1871.

Francis Howard

Source: Materials provided by Janet Lee Lighthill (ib3657j@juno.com)viae-mail, 9/23/1998 details over 1000 descendants of Elizabeth JesseeandFrancis Howard through two lines, that of Nancy Browning Howardwhomarried Wesley Cartwright, and Rachel Howard, who married JamesBrownKelley. Her notes follow.

The source of most of my information on the Francis Howard family isabook, "Johnston of Caroline County, Virginia--Some of the DescendantsofWilliam and Ann Chew Johnston (1647-1778)" compiled by ElbertFeltonJohnston, Ph.D., Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1980. There isa HowardFamily Graveyard four miles north of Jamestown, in BooneCounty, IN.Francis Howard, Elizabeth Jessee Howard, and three of theirdaughters,Margaret Nash Howard, Mary Jane Howard, and Dicey Howard areall fiveburied there, and the markers say (d.) 1848. In the IndianaCensus for1850, Elizabeth Jessee Howard does not appear. Two of herchildren,Rachel Howard (my g-g-grandmother) who is 15 years old, andher brotherHenry, who is 10, are both on the census. They are bothliving in thehousehold of William W. Brown, age 26, in MontgomeryCounty. Two weekslater, Rachel turns up alone in the houshold ofWilliam H. Williamson andfamily back in Boone County. I think ifthink that if there was a WillFerguson married to an Elizabeth Jessee,it must have been anotherElizabeth. I'm told Elizabeth Howard left awill in Boone Co., IN in1848. I have Rachel Howard and James BrownKelley's marriage license anda copy of their obituaries which appearedin the Van Wert, IA newspaper.

Source: Carol Southall Atkinson (carola@panamacity.com)provided,8-18-1999, descendants information for Francis Howard andElizabethJessee, noting: "This information came to me from mygrandfather,Clarence Lafayette Wilson, from family Bibles. He was born08 Oct 1887 inOsceola, Iowa and died 30 Dec 1967 in Morgan Co, CO. Hewas the son ofFranz Jeannette "Jenny" Kelley (03 Nov 1863/23 Mar 1947)who was thedaughter of James Brown and Rachel Howard Kelley.
From the Biographical and Historical Records of Clarke Co, IA,publishedby Lewis Publishing Co in 1886, James Brwon Kelley...firstmarried toMargaret S. Kelley...she died, leaving three children."Again united inmarriage Jan 24, 1851 to Rachel Howard, a daughter ofFrancis anElizabeth Howard.

Source: Nancy Hill [nhill@kc.rr.com], provided, 2/22/2002,thedescendants and pedigree of Francis Howard. Much of the informationisthe same as provided by Janet Lighthill-Ridley, Carol Atkinson andLaelaJo Lindner. The birthdates I have for Francis and ElizabethHoward'schildren are from guardianship papers filed in Boone County,Indianaafter Francis's death and are dated 8/14/1848 with AndersonHoward listedas guardian.
The books I have used are Johnston of Caroline County, VirginiabyElbert Felton Johnston, Ph.D., and Ten Generations of VirginiaHowards byWalter L. Howard, Ph.D.

Sarah Howard Kelly is my twice great grandmother also and she andherhusband, James Kelly are buried in Green Bay Cemetary in Clark Co,nearOsceola, Iowa. I am specifically referring to Sarah Howard Kelly, wife ofJames Kelly. Their daughter, Franz Jeannette Kelly was mygreatgrandmother. She married Allen Wilson. Their daughter, SarahJessie, mother of my father Clifton Redman, and I am Phyllis RedmanBierbaum. Ihave all those Redmans that listed as just living. If youwant me to, Ican give you a complete listing of all the descendents ofSarah'sdaughter Franz Jeannette. I have a picture of James/SarahKelly, andhave the Howards back to Virginia.

NOTE: Based on the original death date of 1830 I have recorded forthisSarah Jane Howard, this may not be the same Sarah Howard whomarriedJames Kelly referred to by Phyllis Bierbaum. See also hersister Rachel, who marries a James Brown Kelley, and has thedescendants noted above. Imay simply have an error here and have thewrong sister married to JamesKelly.

In response to the above note, Phyllis responded: My great=grandmotherisRachel Kelly, wife of James Kelly, buried in Green Bay Cemetary -mynormal e-mail is PBier30930@aol.com - but didn't want to confuse youwithSarah Jane and Rachel - but they were both Howards? PhyllisBierbaum

Mr. Jesse having arrived inthe new countrywith but $8 in pocket, and almost destitute of life'swherewith, gladlyconsented. By the united efforts of the two men acabin of hewn logs wasbuilt, and the two families took possession. Inthe following year, 1830,Mr. Browning having suffered from illness, desired to visit an Indiandoctor, Dudley, in Ky. Accordingly Mr.Jessee, his nephew, set out withhim for that purpose. In those early days Mr.J. hauledwheat to Chicago, sold pork at $1.25 per hundred and went toAttica forsalt, paying $8.50 per barrel. In 1829 John Kelley enteredland here.

150. Boedicia "Dicy" (Dicie Dyca) Jessee

Iris L. Hall Reports that Dicy Jessee (445), daughter of ArcherJessee, married George Candler. I show her married to a John Candler.FaynolaOsborne also reports that Dyca Jessee (445), daughter of ArcherJesseemarried George Candler. I have rearranged the data accordingly, althoughthere remains confusion about the birth and death dates. Ishowed adeath date for Archer's Dicy of 1829, which would have madeher only 14years old at the time.

The alleged marriage to John Candler is left over from thepreviousrecord and may be an error.

You have notes from Iris Hall and Faynola Osborne that Dicy belongstoArcher Jessee & Nancy Browning. I have to agree with them. Ibelievethey are correct. Check out the names of George Candler & DicyJessee'schildren. You will see that George Candler and Dicy Jesseenamed two ofthe children John & Dorothy after Georges parents namesand two of themArcher and Nancy B. after Dicy's parents names. Alsonote that none oftheir children were named David or Catherine. I'dthink, that if in factDavid & Catherine were Dicy's parents, that itwould be awful strange toname your children after other ancestors &relatives and not have anynamed after their grandparents on theirmothers side.

Jim,

While researching William Jessee(b.1830) s/o Vincent
Jessee(b.1800)& Elizabeth Candler I came across this
Feb 2005 email in the archives.

[See 2005 referenced email on William Jessee record]

Mr Sanger website indicated Vincent Jessee married 23 Dec 1861 LinnCo,OR to Sarah Miranda MILLER, born 3 June 1845 (cp) or 1844? (calc)UnionCo IN (cp), died 19 Nov 1871 age 27y 5m 16d Linn Co OR (cem),interredBrownsville Pioneer Cemetery Linn Co OR (cms)

My compiled information & census date on William Jessee & family:

1850 Russell census indicated William age 20 living withparents-Vincent&
Elizabeth Jessee.

1860 Linn Co, OR census p.316B William Jesse age 28 w/personalproperty
$1,000 & is farm laborer b.VA. living in household #324 ofPerryEvans(25)
& Evans family (wife & 4 children). The adjoining family household #325
was Enoch Miller & family which included Sarah Miller age 14 b. IN who
would be William Jessee's future wife.

A daughter who died in 1867 was buried in the Halsey Pioneer Cemetery
which is just west of Brownsville, OR. His wife Sarah, who remarried, was
buried in the Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery, located just NEofBrownsville,
in 1871. I would assume that William Jessee is died between 1867-1870&
is buried in an (UM) grave probably near Brownsville.
Brownsville, located in the Willamette Valley along the CalapooiaRiver,
was settled in 1846 & became a town in 1853. Brownsville is surroundedby
flat agricultural fields to the west & forested hills to the east.

dod-Will of Vincent Sr dated in 1876 mentions heirs of sonWilliam, deceased.

by 1880 census the 3 Jessee children were living in 3 different
households in Linn Co, OR.

In your database you indicate Nancy Snapp b. aft 1830 d/o WilliamA.Snapp&
Priscilla Price was the wife of William Jessee & that William &NancyJessee
had a child-Vincent. Do you have any sources for this marriage?

William Jessee was unmarried living with his parents in 1850. TheWilliam
Jesse in the 1860 Linn Co, OR census was unmarried. Nancy Snapp
should have been in William A. & Priscilla Snapp's household inRussellCo
in 1850, but she was not. I could not find a Nancy Snapp in WiilliamA.
Snapp's household in the 1840 thru 1860 census as follows:

Is it possible that information in the Vincent Jessee(1800-1877) Willwas
misread(see below)? "Nancy Snapp & heirs of William Jessee
deceased" could have been misread to mean that Nancy Snapp was William
Jessee's widow. But this Nancy Snapp in the Will was actuallyWilliam's
sister, Nancy Jessee b.1832 who married William Delaney Snapp s/oWilliam
A. Snapp & Priscilla Price on 4 Jun 1861 in Russell Co, VA. Based on
my research, I do not believe that William Jessee was ever married
to a Nancy Snapp.

You state in your description of Mary Ann Bickey states that shewasmarried abt 1874 to "Little David" Jessee, but you expressreservationabout this.

The 1870 census of Scott County, Virginia, shows David Jessee anda'Mary' with a one-month old child, also named Mary. I wouldsuspect, since he was a baptist minister, that the technicality of themarriagehad already been taken care of, but I can't find any documentsyet.
