I found an error in the Jessee Database. See the family ofJeremiahPuckett & Margaret Jessee: You have Jeremiah listed as a sonof John &Lucinda Puckett. This is incorrect. Jeremiah was actually ason ofGeorge & Elizabeth Puckett. George & Elizabeth are in HH #7341850 RCVcensus with some of their children. Here is a link to thewill of GeorgePuckett, dated that lists George Puckett's children, including JeremiahPuckett.

I'm trying to get all these Pucketts straightened out in the census.

The Jessee Mill
The Roller Process Jessee Mill was built between 1889 and 1900, byAndrewJackson Jessee. It is located on Mill Creek four miles southwestofCleveland on Route 645 and about six miles from Lebanon, in RussellCo.,VA.
The mill was built from lumber grown and sawed on the Jessee farmwhichconsisted of several hundred acres of land. Most of the lumberwas yellowpoplar and has not deteriorated with age. The machinery inthe mill wasmade in Salem, VA. All the cogs or gears in the machineryare wood. Priorto the building of the present mill there had been agrist mill near thesite of the present one for around fifty years.
The building consisted of three floors and the machinery wasinstalledthrough the three floors. For several years the Jessee Millwas the onlyroller mill in Russell Co. People came from all over thecounty andsurrounding counties to have meal and flour ground. Hugestorage binswere located in the mill for storing grain for thefarmers.
Mill Creek during that time was a thriving settlement. There wasageneral store, a oneroom country school and a church.
The mill was owned and operated by Jack Jessee until his death in1922.His son, Wiley E. Jessee operated it for ten years. The millclosed in1932.
Mr. Joe Axem served as the first miller at the Jessee Mill.MelvinKestner operated the mill for twenty-five or thirty years. Helived inthe white house just below the Jessee home. Jamie Chafinoperated themill for sometime, also Tilton Jessee. Other men whoserved as millerssometime during the life of the mill are as follows:Vince Fields, MalcomBuchanan, Red Joe Jessee, Clint Fields, BruceCampbell and Newton Massie.
Jack Jessee built a large brick home in 1883 and lived there untilhisdeath, which house is still standing. The home is located justbelow themill. The lumber was sawed on the place, and the carvings onthe doorsand wood work was hand carved. Located on the second floorhall is a redstained glass window which Mr. Jessee imported fromEngland when thehouse was built.
In Mr. Jessee's later life, he was unable to go to the mill, but hewouldlie in bed and see people coming to the mill through a largemirror nearhis bedroom window. He always wanted everyone to come inand talk withhim.

161. Fleming Burk Jessee

Source: 1860 Census, Russell Co., VA, pg. 161, #1085; 1870 Census,ScottCo., VA.

Source: Teresa Schwager (pndragon@netnitco.net) provided,8-9-1999,"Fleming Burk Jessee and many of his children didn't live inLee Co., butlived at Jessee Holler near Mabe in Scott Co. There aremany Jesseesthere today."

Source: Lester G. Shadrick (lshad@mounet.com) provided,11/16/1999,information regarding Fleming Burk Jessee and his family.
"I noticed that you have in your data, that Mary "Polly" BrowningJesseedied in Russell County after 1860. This is possible I suppose, but, Iknow that she and her husband Flemming B. Jessee were stillliving in1883. 1 have a copy of a title bond dated July 9, 1883 (ScoffCounty)concerning some land, that reads in part ... that James A.Jessee bindshimself to take care proper care, or that he sees thatFlemman B. Jessee(sic) and Mary Jessee his wife and our mother iscared for during theirnatural lives...
Now, In my last letter I mentioned the older cemetery with 2markedgraves, and others unmarked. The marked ones read:
Rebecca Jessee - Born April 5, 1848 / Died Nov 6, 1895 "Asleep inJesus"(this is a stone marker with an angel on it)
Mary Jessee - Born May 29th 1818 / Died May 1 st 1893 (this is ametalmarker with praying hands on it)
I'm not sure about the birth month of May, it is so rusted it isalmostunreadable. I believe that this is the grave of Mary BrowningJessee. There is an unmarked grave beside Mary (Rebecca is on the otherside),that I feel is probably Flemming. This is purely conjecture onmy part."

JackHockettresponded, 9/22/96 as follows: "Whoever said Mary, d/o FrancisBrowning,Jr. married anyone other than Fleming Jessee is mistaken. This is veryclearly confirmed in the papers relating to the estate ofFrancisBrowning, Jr. (and Sarah Nash Hendricks), wife.... Mary Jesseeismentioned several times in Francis, Jr.'s estate."

This is confirmed by Kathryn Greever, 10/15/96, who makes referencetoSource: Russell Co. Deed Book 12, p. 217. "Admitted to record, Oct.3,1848," based on deed dated 1845, names heirs of FrancesBrowning, including daughter Polly and son-in-law, Fleming B. Jessee.

162. Mary "Polly" Jessee

Sent: 2/20/01
I'm writing to you this time about the Mary "Polly" Jessee that youhavelisted on your website as a d/o Vincent Jessee & Elizabeth Candle[Nowcorrected] based upon info that you had received from SandraNorwood [SEENOTE BELOW]. This is the Mary that you thought belongedto James Jessee& Jane Burk. One of the messages that you show youreceived from Sandrais as follows. You said you were stumped from itand that from thisevidence it would appear that Mary Polly dau. ofJames Jessee was not thesame person as her Mary Jessee that sheclaimed was a d/o Vincent Jessee& Elizabeth Candler. Here's herquoted message:
"I was checking my 1850 census I found James Jessee in 1850 RussellcoVa. with his daughter Polly (Mary)? he was 56 yrs old and she was35.that made her born about 1815 in 1850 my Mary (Polly) was withDanielWilliams. as their first daughter was born Nov. 1842"
No wonder you were confused. The problem with Sandra's statement is
that the Mary Jessee listed in James Jessee's household was not his
daughter, but rather, Mary "Polly" Browning, d/o Francis Browning, Jr.&Jeanette Alexander and wife of James' son Fleming Burke Jessee. Here'sthe entry from the census with annotations that I've made:

100 Jessee James 56 Russ. s/John Jessee & Frances "Frankey" Lea
100 Jessee (Jane) (BURK) (Dec'd) w/James Jessee, d/o Fleming Burk,
Sr. & Nancy ?
100 Jessee Flemming B. 36 Russ. s/James Jessee & Jane Burk
100 Jessee Polly BROWNING 35 Russ. d/Francis Browning Jr. &JeanetteAlexander
100 Jessee Nancy 7 Russ.
100 Jessee Christopher 5 Russ.
100 Jessee James 3 Russ.
100 Jessee Rebecca 1 Russ.

Now, getting back to Mary Jesse that married Daniel Williams. Here's
their entry from the 1850 census:
187 Williams Daniel35 Russ. s/Samuel Williams & Elizabeth Crump
187 Williams Mary JESSEE 25 Russ. d/James Jessee&Jane Burk
187 Williams Rebecca 10 Russ.
187 Williams Elizabeth 8 Russ.
187 Williams Charles 5 Russ.
187 Williams Flemming 2 Russ.
187 Williams Nancy 9 m Russ.
Note that their second to last childs name is Flemming. As I'm sureyouknow, Jane Burk's fathers name was Fleming Burk. Fleming was aname thatwas carried down a great deal in the Burk family. Also, Isuspect thatMary was probably a little older than is shown on thecensus based uponthe fact that she was probably married about 1839.She's shown as age 38in the 1860 census.
Based upon the above info, I'm reasonably sure that Sandra isincorrectand that Mary Jessee was a d/o James Jessee and Jane Burklike youthought all along. A check of the Burk book by Jack Hockettalso backsthis up.

NOTE: The parents of Mary "Polly" Jessee child may be in errorassubmitted by Sandra Norwood, who is refuted above. However, infairnessand giving credence to Bible information in the possession ofSandra, Iam providing the following contrary opinion. Other problemswith herdata include her birth date does not jibe with the allegedmarriage datefor Vincent and Elizabeth Candler Jessee.

I have Mary Jessee born in 1824, Lebanon, Russell co. Va. Married to
Daniel Williams her parents are Vincent Jessee born 1800 LebanonRussellco Va. which was married to Elizabeth Candler she was born in1803 sameplace...this was in a bible on my Williams side....I noticedthat you didnot have her listed as a child to Vincent Jessee andElizabeth.....I havebeen looking for this family for awhile and now Ithink I foundit...please let me know if you know anything else...thankyou SandraNorwood.
Sandra also cites, in another message, the brothers and sisters ofMaryPolly Jessee, and they are the family of Vincent and ElizabethCandler

NOTE: This is a speculation that this Mary Jessee is the same personasdescribed above. The problem to be resolved is that I showedheroriginally as a daughter of James Jessee, not Vincent Jessee, whohas ason, John Taz Jessee born in 1824.

Further evidence from Sandra would further indicate that Mary Pollyda.of James Jessee is not the same person described here.
1842......sonow I'mstumped...

Concerning Mary “Polly” Jessee that is listed in the JamesJesseehousehold HH #100 on the 1850 census. Sandra, you state thatyourresearch shows that James Jessee & Jane Burks daughter Mary wasborn abt1812/1815, meaning that the Polly in James Jessee’s householdin 1850 washis daughter. The only problem with this is that thatinformation iscompletely and totally incorrect. The Mary “Polly”Jessee that is listedin James Jessee’s household in 1850 was not hisdaughter, but rather thewife of his son Fleming Burk Jessee. There isoverwhelming evidence tosupport this. First there are two deeds, onefrom Deed Book 10, pg 135and another from Deed Book 12, pg. 217 thatidentifies Mary,
wife of Fleming B. Jessee, as a daughter of Francis Browning. Nextthereis the will of Mary’s uncle William Browning, Sr. written 14 Oct1851 andproven 04 Nov 1851 where he wills to her as follows: “12. Igive to myneice Polly Jessee, wife of Fleming B. Jessee the sum of onehundreddollars,to be paid equally to her by my devises Frances A.Browning,Melissa E. Browning, Polly Munscy and John Browning, whichwill be twentyfive dollars to be paid by each of them.” And lastly, acomparison of thehouseholds of Fleming B. Jessee in 1850 & 1860 willclearly show thatmary is his wife. Here they are:
1850 Census entry:
30 100 100 Jessee James 56 M

31 100 100 Jessee Flemming B. 36 M

32 100 100 Jessee Polly 35 F

33 100 100 Jessee Nancy 7 F

34 100 100 Jessee Christopher A. 5 M

35 100 100 Jessee James 3 M

36 100 100 Jessee Rebecca 1 F

1860 Census entry:
7 1085 1085 Jessee Flemminng B. 45 M W

8 1085 1085 Jessee Polly 42 F W

9 1085 1085 Jessee Nancy C. 16 F W

10 1085 1085 Jessee Christopher 14 M W

11 1085 1085 Jessee James 13 M W

12 1085 1085 Jessee Rebecca 11 F W

13 1085 1085 Jessee Martha 9 F W

14 1085 1085 Jessee Margaret 7 F W

15 1085 1085 Jessee Lucinda 6 F W

16 1085 1085 Jessee Ellan M. 4 F W

17 1085 1085 Jessee John 2 M W
As you can see Fleming & Polly have the same children on bothcensuseswith additional ones added on the 1860 census. As anadditional piece ofevidence, I will site two sources by Jack Hockettwho has done extensiveresearch on the Browning & Burk familes and isone of the bestresearchers I have seen. The first is “Ancestors andDescendants ofBenjamin Snead and Felicia Oliver”, published 1995, pg.205, where Mary“Polly” is identified as a Browning. The second is“Some Descendants ofJohn Burk (1656-1699), Middlesex County, VA”,published 1999, pg. 63,Where Mary “Polly” is identified as a daughterof Francis Browning and
most likely his first wife Jeanette Alexander. This book wasactuallydone by the concerted efforts of Kathryn Burke Greever, JackHockett,Imogene Burke Verbal and Rue Burke Stevenson. They use muchthe samesources that I mentioned above. Sandra, I don’t know whatresearch youhave that this Mary was the daughter of James Jessee, butwhatever it is,I’m sure you will agree from the info above that itmust be incorrect.
Now, as to who your Mary Jessee was a daughter of. I personallydon’thave any definative documentation as to this. You claim she is adaughterof Vincent Jessee and Elizabeth Candler based upon a biblerecord youhave. You state your Mary Jessee was born abt 1821-1822 andI have seenas early as 1819. She was listed as age 25 on the 1850Russell census andage 38 on the 1860 census which places her birthbetween 1822 & 1825 bythose sources. Anyway, Vincent Jessee andElizabeth Candler were married20 Jun 1822 and their first child,Archer Samuel Jessee was born almostexactly 9 months later on 11 Mar1823. Their next child, John TriggJessee was born 13 months later on22 Jun 1824 and their 3rd childFrancis Browning Jessee was born 17months later on 17 Nov 1825. Thefirst opportunity for Mary to fit intoVincent Jessee’s family after hismarriage would be between Francis B.and their next child, George W.Jessee who was born 18 Aug 1827. Thiswould place Mary’s birth then inmid to late 1826 which I think we canall agree would be to late for her.So, to assume that your Mary was adaughter of Vincent Jessee means thatyou must also assume that she wasborn out of wedlock prior to hismarriage to Elizabeth Candler becausethere is just no room for her tohave been born after their marriage. There has been several mentions of abible record that shows Mary as adaughter of Vincent Jessee. I have notseen the bible record, but myexperience has been that when peoplerecorded their bible records theyusually included exact dates of birth, marriage, death etc. So far Ihaven’t seen anywhere an exact date ofbirth for Mary. I would like tosee the bible record.
Now I don’t have direct proof that Mary was a daughter of James JesseandJane Burk. However, she doesn’t seem to fit anywhere else and thenamingof her son Fleming Jessee Williams (see the Burk book, pg. 118)is astrong indication that she was a Burk descendant (Jane was theonly Burkdaughter to marry a Jessee) as the Fleming name was carrieddown a greatdeal among their descendants. As evidence, Jane Burk was adaughter ofFleming Burk, Sr. Fleming Sr. named one of his sonsFleming, Jr. Janenamed one of her children Fleming Burk Jessee.Fleming Burk Jessee namedone of his sons Fleming Burk Jessee also. Itwould only make sense thatMary Burk, if she were a daughter of JamesJessee & Jane Burk, would nameone of her children Fleming aftergrandfather and brother.
I am open to any possibility, but from the evidence I have seen, Iammore inclinded to believe that Mary was a daughter of James Jessee &JaneBurk. And remember, I am looking at this as an unbiased observerwho hasno personal stake in the matter. If anyone has other evidencethat pointsotherwise I would be more than interested in seeing it.

Here is some additional info from Jack Hockett concerning Daniel &MaryWilliams family. He mentions that they had "not only a Fleming, but aREBECCA, as well" for children. Somehow I had forgotten aboutFlemingBurk Sr's wife, Rebecca (Miller?). So Daniel & Mayr williamshad twochildren in their household who were named after Fleming &Rebecca Burk.Jack also sends info about where Daniel & Mary moved toas follows:"note the area of MO they went to teeming with Fleming Burkand Rebecca[Miller?]'s descendants" This is just a little moreevidence to supportMary being being a daughter of James Jessee & JaneBurk.

Dear almost cousin Dick: Thank you for responding to my Linn Co., MOwebquery. My third great grandfather, Fleming/Flemming Burk,Sr.,(1767-1748) narried Rebecca (Miller?). They had 8 children.Fleming,Sr. has been traced back 3 generations with good speculationon the 4th.Fleming, Sr.'s 2nd child, Jane Burk , married James Jessee,10th child ofJohn Jessee and Frances Lee/Lea, with John having been inthe Rev. War inNC. Jane and James had 4 children, with the 4th beingMary Jessee whomarried Daniel Williams. I am a descendant of Fleming,Sr.'s 6th child,Fleming Burk, Jr. who married Rebecca Jessee, agranddaughter of theabove John >Jessee and Frances Lee. So, it seemsI'm a cousin of yourcousins.
[NOTE: I believe there are errors in the information above.]
When tracing Daniel and Mary (Jessee) Williams, my three cousins andIwho >were work ing on the Burk line, couldn't sort out thoseWilliamsvery well.
1. Rebecca Williams married James O. Patrick on Feb. 14, 1861 inRussellCo., VA. As best I can tell, they had no children.(1900 cen.listRebecca as mother of no children)
2. Elizabeth Williams married on Jan. 29, 1867 in Russell Co.,VA,Albert Browning Jessee, son of Archer S and Christina Jessee. Shehadone daughter, Dora, born 1867, and apparently died becauseAlbertremarried on Feb. 14, 1870. I traced Dora to the 1880Washington Co., VAcensus, at age 12, but not thereafter. Couldn'tfind marriage or death.Don't know what happened to her.
3. Charles Williams married on Feb. 3, 1868 in Russell Co., VA,(d.1869Sull. Co. Mo.) Mary R(Catherine) Finney. I couldn't tell ifMarydied,(d. 1879 but had married again) but a Chas. Williams marriedin1888, Rachel A. Dobson. This marriage could have been toanotherChas.(This is Charles Patrick Williams only child of CharlesWilliams &Mary Finney, he was raised by Rebecca & Jame O. Patrick)<Ihave Picturesof his family Wms. Just couldn't sort this out.
4. Fleming Jesse Williams married on Nov. 27, 1880 in Linn Co., MO,(d.1903 Union Co. Ore.)(I haven't checked the 1900 Union Co. Ore.Censusyet) Nancy Hickabottom originally Higginbotham. I found fourchildrenon the 1880 Linn Co., MO census--Maggie and James D. , withnothingfurther on them, along with George Walter who married DeloresParker onMar. 15, 1878 in Island City, OR. They seem to have had fourchildren.Miles (1900-1971) no spouse in obituary, no ch. in obituary.Eva Maemarried Edwin Winslow Walker; Ruth married a Bates and (2) aNeebergal, Ithink. Howard lived in CA in 1971, but no further info.Sophie, tracedto 1900 Union Co., OR census at age 21.
5. Nancy married her cosin,James Stinson, and I have a good bit onthisone.
6. Sarah traced to 1870, but am not sure who she married sincetherewere several marriages for a Sarah Wms.
7. Patsy married in 1887, J. W. Bundridge, as best I can tell, andtheyhad 2 children. One died as an infant, and Adrice married aPropson, andived in Rocklin, CA. After Patsy's death, Joseph marriedGertie Arnold.
8. Eliza Wms. a twin married Wm. Thomas Brookshier, and I have bitsandpieces on their 8 children. Seems they went to Logan Co., OK. >( Ihaveinfo on 4 of the Brookshire children and have written to adescendant)
9. James, twin born Apr. 21, 1857 seems to have died young. (IhaveJames Robert Williams b. 21 Apr. 1857 with a wife Eva on 1880Sull. Co.cen.)<not there in 1900>
10. Richard, born Oct. 29, 1858 seems to have married MaryEvalineCockerham and they seem not to have had children.
11. Thomas, born Dec. 20, 1859, probably married, but too manyThomasWms. for me to sort out.(me either)
12. Mary Evaline, born Mar. 7, 1861, married Nov. 30, 1890 in eitherORor WA, James McKenzie. Seem not to have had children.
I've not included every little detail; however, as you can see, muchismissing. If you have known cousins who descended from this line, there ismore information available to them on the Jessee and Burkfamilies. Ifthey >would be interested, it's all in "Some Descendantsof John Burk(1656-1699) Middlesex Co., VA., published by IberianPublishing Co.,Athens, GA. They're on line at ibertian.com The bookis $34.95 plus $5S&H. Authors are: Greever, Hockett, Verbal, andStevenson--all cousins.
Those Brownings of Browning were also from Russell Co., VA andHockett, above, is a descendant of Russell Co., Brownings who alsomarried intothe Burks. The Brownings were very prominent while theBurk folks werejust very solid middle class.
