Source: John H. Jessee [PO Box 102, Sugar Grove, VA 24375]wrote,3/25/2001, with this very important information both correctingandproviding additional information for the descendants of WilliamVincentJessee, Jr. son of William Vincent Jessee, son of ArcherJessee. WilliamVincent Jessee, Jr. married Rebecca Stinson, daughterof Edward Stinsonand Jennie Burk, daughter of William Burk and RebeccaJessee. This isalso a delightful letter full of family stories.
This letter is in part a response to an article by Frederick AlanJesseein the July 2000 issue of the Jessee Newsletter. On page sixteenof thenewsletter is an article that refers to William Vincent JesseeJr. andhis relationship to Frederick Alan Jessee and other familymembers.Several errors were made in this article with references todates andrelationships. I would like to provide corrections to thisarticle to thebest of my ability. Organizing an informative andcorrect genealogyrecord of numerous family members can be difficult. Ibehave we have manyserious researchers that have spent innumerablehours researching tosatisfy their own interest, and to provideinformation to others ifrequested. Therefore, I presume, when apparenterrors have been made andpublished, that anyone having access to thecorrect information shouldmake an effort to provide the corrections. In doing so I hope my actionswill not be offensive to anyone.
Beginning with the first sentence of the article, the relationshipofWilliam Vincent Jessee Jr to Frederick Alan Jessee would be greatgreatgrandfather rather than great grandfather- Frederick Alangreatgrandfather would have been Edward Thomas Jessee. Edward ThomasJessee,(b. 1878 d. 1955) was one of three children resulting from themarriageof William Vincent Jessee Jr. to Rebecca Stinson. WilliamVincent JesseeJr. was born in Russell County in 1848 and died inRussell County in1936. His first marriage was to Rebecca Stinson (b.1846 d. 1903).William Vincent Jessee's second marriage was toMaragerine Mullins in1905. Maragerine Mullins was born in 1905 anddied in 1931. She was thedaughter of John Mullins of Dickenson County,Virginia.
I behave I can speak with certainty regarding the references madetoKemper Jessee. Kemper Jessee was my father and his name was KemperGilmerJessee rather than Kemper John Jessee, He was the son of EdwardThomasJessee and Harriet Virginia Rasnake Jessee (b. 1876 d. 1964). MyFatherwas born in Russell County in 1904 and died in Tazewell Countyin 1987.He married my mother, Laura Belle Buckles Jessee in 1925. Mymother wasborn in Russell County in 1907 and is the daughter of JohnBuckles(1875-1954) and Alpha Jessee Buckles (1884-I953).
My mother was ninety-four years of age on the sixteenth of Marchtwothousand and one. I was able to talk with her on that date andduring ourconversation I ask her about her Grandmother Buckles. She,without anyhesitation in the conversation, proceeded to tell me aboutmy greatgrandmother and several other family members. My motherinformed me thatMy great grandmother's name was Mary Taze Cowan priorto her marriage tomy great grandfather Charles Buckles and thatCharles Buckles father'sname was Abraham Buckles. Mother said that herfather's full name wasJohn Taze Buckles and that he had been given hismother's middle name.Without the slightest hesitation that some of alesser age, includingmyself, would find necessary to remember a name, she told me that mygreat grandmother's father's name was CharlesCowan. Several other Cowannames were mentioned, but I was unable, dueto the excitement of thebirthday event, to make the other Cowan familyconnections. Some of Cowannames mentioned were Sally, Sally Wool andMary Elizabeth.
After all the incredible name remembering my mother hesitated, laughedalmost silently and said she would never forget the storygrandma hadtold her when she was a child about grandma's elopementwith GrandpaBuckles. Mom remembered that her grandma told her that sheand grandpahad been pledged when they were children by theirrespective families tobe married when they reached a suitable age.According to great grandma’s story as told by my mom, when the timedrew near for them to bemarried, rather than waiting for thetraditional marriage ceremony totake place they decided to takematters into their own hands and secretlysteal away and be married.
The plans to elope were made, but one slight but significantproblemstood in their way. That problem was a bulldog owned by greatgrandma'sfather Charles Cowan. Evidently this bulldog had gained somenotorietyfor his dedication to the Cowan family. He had built somereputation, especially for his nighttime vigilance guarding the familyand theirpossessions. The bulldog had one weakness that my greatgrandmother wasaware of that might cause him to become distracted fromhis guard duties. This dog had developed a fondness for biscuits, andgreat grandmarealized if she kept him occupied by feeding him biscuitsduring thecourse of the evening of the planned arrival of greatgrandpa that greatgrandpa might arrive without being detected. On thedate the elopementwas to take place; great grandma had hidden away asufficient quantity ofbiscuits that she hoped would serve the purposeof her intent.
As planned, on the eve of great grandpa's arrival to steal her awayandafter the family had gone to bed, great grandma began the task offeedingthe bulldog biscuits. By the time great grandpa arrived thebulldog wasso stuffed with biscuits that he had forgotten his primaryresponsibilityto warn the family of intruders. Without regard to hisreputation he hadfallen asleep and failed to awaken the family whengreat grandpa stole mygreat grandma away.
This story somewhat provides a brief glimpse into the past and intotheactivities of the lives of our ancestors. I can in one waypersonallyrelate to a part of the story. I have just like the bulldogdeveloped afondness for biscuits. I have wonderful memories of mymother's biscuits, those that she seemed to prepare as if by magic andwith little effort.Biscuits that were baked in an oven of a wood firedcook stove. Biscuitsthat always made one of the first activities ofthe day a delightfulevent. I can still hear mom say "breakfast isready."
My mom tells this story along with many others about hergrandmother,Mary Taze Cowan Buckles. The stories are told with vividrecollection asif she were still a child and her grandmother had toldher these thingsonly yesterday I have no doubt that my mom, LauraBelle Buckles Jessee, had a very close relationship with hergrandmother. This had been arelationship that has undoubtedly beencherished by my mother through theyears, and one that has provided, after all these many years, the abilityto recollect and pass along thewonderful stories that were told to her.
I would be forever grateful if you would share with me anyinformationyou might have regarding the Buckles and /or the Cowanfamilies ofRussell County. I have been negligent in my efforts to gaindocumentedinformation pertaining to this branch of my family.

Daisy Cordelia Grace, born Mar. 31, c1873/74; died in 1950 at the ageof76, was the daughter of John Emory Grace and Nancy A. Burk. ThatBurkline merges with mine and is traced back to the immigrant, JohnBurk whocame from England to Lancaster County, VA c 1650.
According to the book by Greever, Hockett, Verbal, and Stevenson"SomeDescendants of John Burk (1656-1699) Middlesex County, VA"(IberianPublishing Company, Athens, GA 1999)p 123 Daisy Cordelia GracemarriedJames Edward Hagy on Oct. 17, 1898. She was 25 and he was 17years old atthe time. Then they moved to Tillman Co., OK and he becamea farmer. Theyhad seven children: Emory Jacob, James, Merrit, Hebert,Charles, MaryGay, and Grace. The book has most of their descendantsthrough 1998. Thebook has the following; " Family Story from PollyHansen: "The Hagyslived about 3 miles NW of my grandmother's (Mary A.Ferguson Burke). Iremember going there many times on a Sunday andhaving dinner on a verylong table which seated their family of nineand ours of six. They were avery fun-loving family and after dinnerAunt Daisy would play theaccordion with daughter Grace at the organ. They made their own cheese -huge rounds, plus slaughtered cows andpigs, and cured meat - all was inthe smoke house. Aunt Daisy made alltheir clothes - overalls and "SundayGo-To-Meetin' suits. In the cellarthey had incubators set up to hatchchickens and my 5 year old brotherJohn and I (age 3) went down in thecellar where he proceeded to breakseveral dozen eggs - we did not goback for a visit for a very longtime. My folks were too embarrassed. Shealso remembers Daisy and herhusband as being heavy-set."

I have contacted you before, I just thought I should tell you I have
just got the following info. so we can update our records. John istheson of George and Amelia Grace.

Subject: Database correction
I just noticed that the parents that you have shown for John E. Graceinyour WorldConnect database are wrong. He was the son of John Grace,b.ca. 1801 and Susannah Bays, b. ca. 1810. This relationship is"proven" bythe 1871 marriage certificate of J. E. Grace and N. M. Burkin RussellCounty where his parents are shown as John and SusanahGrace. Themarriage record is on-line at the Russell County GenWeb sitein the 1871marriages. There are some transcription errors in theon-line recordwhere she is shown as N. M. Buck instead of Burk (I havea copy from theCounty Clerk that shows "Burk".

Further support is provided by the Russell County Census for 1850 and
1860 where a John E. Grace of about the right age is shown in thefamilyof John Grace and wife Susannah. A John Grace is listed in thissamefamily in the 1870 Census for Russell County. That Susannah'smaiden namewas Bays is addressed by "SOME EARLY RUSSELL CO VA MARRIAGECLUES" byJack Hockett, also on the Russell County GenWeb site in theVital Recordssection. There are also some Russell County land recordsshowing thisrelationship.

The parents that you have shown, George and Amelia Grace, probablycomesfrom the 1850 and 1860 Census of Washington County, VA, wherethere is aJohn Grace of about the right age in the family of Georgeand AmeliaGrace.

John E. Grace and Nancy M. Burk are my great great grandparents. (You
have "Emory" for his middle name and that may be correct but mysourcesonly show "E.")

Jim,

First let me say that the spelling can be found usually as OwsleyorOusley.

All of this took place in Claiborne Co, TN & the source for most ofthisinfo
is "Some Descendants of John Burk 1656-1699)" in the section of thebook
related to Mary M. Burk(1824-1864) who married John Tase/Trigg Jessee
(1824-1887) s/o Vincent Jessee & Elizabeth Candler.

Lucy Jane Ousley(1876-1955) was the daughter of John K.Ousley(1846-1928)&
Mary E. Edmondson(1842-1918). Lucy married MiltonConleyJessee(1878-1942)
on 30 Aug1897 in Claiborne Co, TN

Nancy Rowena Ousley(1881-1950) married Charles BartonJessee(1881-1961)
on 31 Aug 1899, therefore she is not found in a census with herparents. It is possible
that Lucy & Nancy could be sisters.

Charles Barton Jessee & Milton Conley Jessee were brothers. Theirparentswere
Edward Lee Jessee(1857-1936) & Sarah E. Grubb(1859-1888) .

The John K. Ousley mentioned above,had a sister-Martha ElmiraA.Ousley(1840-1923)
who married Isaac Jessee(1846-1887) s/o John Tase/Trigg Jessee & MaryM.Burk
on 24 Oct 1867 in Claiborne Co, TN. In your database you haveIsaac'swife as
Martha Overbay d/o John Ousley.

The parents of John K. Ousley & his sister, Martha Elmira A. Ousleywere
John Ousley(1812-1900) & Mary Sherman(1812-1888)

RE: Conley Trigg Jessee, Arrena Jessee, Lula Jessee, etc.

The records shown here were originally published in the a 3 volumeset,Coleman County Cemeteries Inscriptions, and were copied andcompiled byVena Bob Gates, Judia Terry and Ralph Terry, and werepublished in 1988by Terry Studio, P. O. Box 958, Coleman, Texas 76834,and was copyrighted1988 by Ralph Terry. All rights are reserved, including any reproductionfor profit. Copies of the published works,Coleman County CemeteriesInscriptions (published in 1988) can bepurchased from Ralph Terry at theabove address.

SILVER VALLEY CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS
The Silver Valley Cemetery is located about one-half mile north oftheSilver Valley intersection on US 84. This is a chain link fenced, wellkept cemetery with gates on the south and east sides. The mainentranceis on the south side and the road running from that gatedivides thecemetery into two sections, which we have called Section A(east side)and Section B (west side). Rows are fairly straight, with afewexceptions. Unknown graves have been marked at some time with castcementmarkers, which we will abbreviate '(CM)'. Rows were read in asnakefashion which sometimes separated family lots.

JESSEE, Arrena - Nov 4, 1856 - Jan 13, 1892 - "wife of C. T. Jessee"
(JESSEE, Mrs. Lula - died May 5, 1903 - 42 yrs 6 mos 29 ds - markedwithCM)
(JESSEE, Frankie - died May 5, 1903 - 1 yr 11 mos 26 ds - unmarked)
(JESSEE, Burk - died Dec 15, 1903 - 7 yrs 8 mos 24 ds - marked withCM)

Your database shows Arrena having died in Claiborne Co., TN and thismaybe so but it looks as if she may be buried in this Texascemetery.Conley's second wife Lula appears to be buried here also. There are twoother Jessee children listed and I would almost presumethat they arechildren of Conley and Lula since Arrena died in 1892.

My other question involves James Wesley Jessee as a son of ConleyandLula. His birth date being 1888 makes me wonder if he might infact be ason to Conley and Arrena.
