5249. Georgia Lee Jessee

~5/21/98: Mom said she had a copy of her birth certificate, butshecouldn't find it while I was there. She supposedly got it twice, and itsays she was born in Pine, Ok, not Coalgate, as she had alwayssaidbefore. She has a passport stating her date and place of birth.

Source: Barbara Rouse Cogburn provided this obituary.
Georgia Lee (Louise) COGBURN died in Whittier, CA January 25, 2000 atage93 following a stroke. She was born Sep 1, 1906 in Choctaw Nation,IndianTerritory (now Coal County, OK) and grew up on the family farm.Shemarried her childhood sweetheart, John James (Johnny) Cogburn Sept20,1922, and they came to Los Angeles in 1925 along with Johnny'ssister andhusband. Driving a Ford Model A, they camped in a tentbeside the road atnight and cooked over an open fire as there were fewplaces to findaccommodations. The men kept their guns handy in casethey wereapproached by bandits which wasn't uncommon at the time. Whentheycrossed the Imperial Valley desert, they traveled on a one wayrailroadtie road often covered by drifting sand, and if they metanother car theone closest to the last turnout backed u to allow theother to pass.
They settled in the East L.A. area and had 2 children born in 1927and1932. Tragically, Johnny died in 1934, at the depth of theDepressionleaving her a widow with an 8 th grade education, no workexperience, and2 small children to raise alone. She joined the FourSquare Gospel Churchand her faith became a great comfort to her. Sheremained involved and anactive supporter in her church until herhealth began to fail in 1997.
If anyone doubts that the pioneer spirit still existed in the1930's,they should have known Georgia. She refused to seek any publicassistance(not that there was much available); instead she foundhousecleaning jobs, here she could take her children with her. Later, she stood outsidevarious plants hoping to be chosen for a few hourswork no matter whatthe job. That's how she got her start at the Swift& Co Refinery, workingin the cold room packaging bacon. In 1938 shefinally got a steady jobthere and over the years worked her way intothe Quality AssuranceDivision where she was responsible for theLaboratory kitchen testing ofshortening. She retired in 1971 after 33years with the company.
The challenge of supporting her family had been met, but in 1943,hercourage, determination, and faith were tested again when her sonfellvictim to a widespread polio epidemic. She never gave up and sawhimthrough years of hospitalizations, treatment, and surgery. When hewasable to return to school, she refused to accept the publicschooldiscriminatory policy of the times, which only allowed forlimited hometutoring or segregated classes for children withdisabilities. She senthim to a private school where he excelled in anormal environment, ultimately attending college and pursuing asuccessful career.
Georgia was an exceedingly strong and loving person who set awonderfulexample for everyone who knew her. She set herself the goalof getting ahigh school diploma and began attending adult school atnight when shewas in her 50's; she was so proud when she received herdiploma fromMontebello High School in 1965. She was always eager tobroaden herhorizons, and after retirement she became proficient atsewing/tailoringas well as catering. Her energy was boundless and sheenjoyed travelingand seeing new places. On a month long bus touracross the country with asenior citizen group, she was the only onewho climbed all the way to thetop of the Statue of Liberty. She was avolunteer for many years atBeverly Hospital.
Georgia was an inspiration to all of her family and friends who willmissher terribly. There is comfort in knowing that she is now reunitedwithher beloved Johnny and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Martha MooreJesse, six brothers and sisters, and by her son, Donald Cogburn in1997. She issurvived by her daughter, Doris Edgemon of Pico Riveraanddaughter-inlaw, Barbara Rouse Cogburn of San Diego; grandchildrenMichaelEdgemon and wife Cindy of Pomona, Mark Edgemon and wife Nancyof Upland,Carol and husband Ray Vasquez of San Diego, Caryn andhusband Bill Dixonof Tennessee, Stephen Cogburn and wife Sherry of SanDiego, Laura Cogburnof Los Angeles, and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial: January 29 at 3:00 p.m. at RoseHillsMemorial Park in Whittier, Ca. Pall bearers: Michael Edgemon,MarkEdgemon, Stephen Cogburn, Raymond Vasquez, James Edgemon, andRyanVasquez.

John Oscar Cogburn

~July 6, 1997 : Both Mom and Aunt Bessie in the early 1970's (andIbelieve Aunt Dora in 1982) told me that his name was John Oscar orOscarJohn Cogburn. However, his burial marker at Rose Hills says JohnJ.Cogburn. J. seems a good possibility given that his grandfather'snamewas James, but Mom can no longer remember what the J. stood for,or ifOscar was a part of his name. Don's birth certificate says JohnJ. sohis dad was obviously using that name when Don was born. Theoriginalburial marker is being removed from the grave 7/15/97 andbrought to ourhome in San Diego so that a new double marker can be setbearing both Donand John's names.

~I am writing to you because I recently learned that there areJessesgoing way way back in my family tree. I am the greatgrand-child ofBesse Jesse. Her folks must have left Virginia at sometime, and thenleft for Oklahoma, where she married and gave birth toHubert Flatt, mygrandfather. Not long after that, she migrated fromOklahoma toCalifornia during the Dust Bowl era, where she spent therest of herlife. Anyway, you might remember my grandfather by anothername: KenCarson, a singing cowboy with Roy Rogers'crowd and later anentertaineron the Gary Moore show.

~My line of work is in biotechnology, and so genetics hasalwaysfascinated me in addition to lore and stories. So...to add moreto theJesse legend, let me just chime in a few things that our familyremembersabout Great Grandmother Besse Jesse and Grandpa Ken
Carson. Is it the Jesse genes? Is it environment? Who knows. But itisfun to ponder...

~I don't remember my great grandmother; it's unlikely that wemet. However, I am told that she was a smart, literate, spunky, andsweet ladywith an easy if not innately lyrical grasp of the Englishlanguage.

~I do remember Grandpa Ken. We were never extraordinarily closebecausehe had a busy life in retirement as an entertainer...anyway,what I doremember is that he was funny, lively, passionate, talkative, and anastoundingly good singer. He was in many ways a self-taughtman. Hetaught himself how to sight read music and could master almostanyinstrument in a matter of weeks. He knew how to grill the perfectsteak, and how to take care of guests and make them feel special. I amtoldthat he also once had an occasionally fierce temper and anuh, adventurous side to him.
