Last week we published an account of the death and burial of two ofmr.and Mrs. J.W. Jessee's children, which occurred the previous week, atwhich time brother and sister were laid side by side in one grave, bothhaving fallen victim to the same disease within a few hours. Theheartanguish and strain on the bereft ones seemed almost too great forhumanstrength and fortitude.
But on last Tuesday the peculiar and unfathamable workings of the handofProvidence caused the re-enacting of all those sad andheartrendingexperiences of ten days before by striking down anotherson and daughter, brother and sister, in the same household. In thesame way and mannerthe same sad rites were performed; the same funeralattendants, the samepall-bearers, the same clergy, the same lovingfriends to minister, thesame scene of one open grave to receivebrother and sister side by side, the same grief-stricken parents, brothers and sister, neighbors andfriends, and there lay within a few!feet of earth, placed there withinthe brief space of ten days, sncatched by death from the same hearth andhome, two brothers and twosisters, to await in peace the final waking, yet to
be mourned unceasing by the bleeding hearts of parents and kin untiltimeand change shall heal the wounds. The magnitude of such grief, thehorror of such experience is too great for human hearts not sotouched tocomprehend, much less find words to describe or express.Hinton Jesseewas a bright and promising young man, full of love, ambition and hope.He was in his 23rd year, and had just begun torealize his hope of aneducation, being ready to enter on his secondyear at the State Normal atEmporia. CHARLES T. JESSEE and EMMA BELL JESSEE
It is not often that one is called upon to attend the funeral oftwofriends, members of one household, the same day, but on lastSaturday thefriends and neighbors f "Uncle Jim" Jessee were notifiedthat two of hischildren lay dead in the home and they were asked tocome and helplay theloved ones away. It was the saddest funeral Iever attended. Charlie, nineteen years old, and Emma, nearlyseventeen, bright and lovable, justbudding into young manhood andwomanhood, and, as far as human eye couldsee, with a long and happylife before them, stricken at the same time, dying within a few hoursof each other. To say that the entire communitywas shocked is puttingit very mildly. So quickly had the terrible deathangel done his workthat neighbors living but a mile away were not awarethat there wassickness in the family until notified of the funeral.Only the Saturdaybefore the writer had visited at the home, and whileCharlie was notfeeling very well, yet he was doi!
ng his customary work; and Emma, bright, beautiful, lovavle Emma,(andlet me say here that she was one of the sweetest girls I everknew. Ihave been intimately acquainted with her for ten years, and inall thattime I never heard her speak a cross word nor saaaw a frownupon herbrow) was singing as she worked, as happy as a bird. Littledid I thenthink that within one short week I should be called upon tolay themaway. A short service was held at the house Saturdayafternoon at 2:30o'clock, Rev. Evans, of Arvonia, officiating. He didnot attempt topreach a sermon-said he could not if he would-but hisremarks werewonderfully beautiful. I wish I could give his exactwords, but that isimpossible. Beautiful music was rendered by OwenGriffiths and family ofArvonia, and then, after the sad leavetaking,we slowly winded our way tothe Arvonia cemetery, where in one widegrave we laid them down, side byside, to sleep the sleep that knows nowaking. During their shor!
t liiives they had lived lovingly together, and in death they werenotseperated. The pall-bearers were Ed Schroder (Schrader), ClaudTilford,Willis Jones, George Selig, Will Jones and Leon Jones, allyoung men andfriends of the family. Three other members of the familywere sick,Hinton, aged about 23 years, Frank, 14, and little Carrie, the youngestof the family, aged 11. What the termination will be ofcourse we do notknow, but at this time the sypmtoms are favorable fortheir recovery. And now the question will be asked, What is this dreaddisease that seemsto baffle the skill of our best physicians? I waspermitted to ask thesame question of Dr. Fisher, of Reading, theattending physician, andalso of Dr Zane, of Osage City, who had beencalled as council. Theypronounce it pernicious malarial fever. Bothsay that is all theirpractice in Kansas that they never came incontact with it before. As tothe causes producing it both agree thatthe same causes prod!
ucing ordinary malarial fever will, under certain conditions, producethepernicious feature,Viz:: using impure water, decaying vegetablematter, stagnant pools, etc. That Dr. Fisher did all that anyone coulddo is notto be questioned for a moment. Before closing I wish tospeak of twoveritable angels of mercy whom I met at the home of theafflicted family,a Mrs. Bryant and a Miss Bower, of Reading, comparative strangers to thefamily, but who hearing of theiraffliction and need came, and withgentle hands and kindly words in avery substantial manner provedthemsellves "good Samaritans" indeed. The world would be better if wehad more like them. That the manyfriends of "Uncle Jim" and familyextend heartfelt sympathy goes withsaying. May He who tempers the winduphold them in their direaffliction, and may those now sick be restoredto perfect health. J.H.Buckman
