I speculate that James J. Jessee(I15224) is could be JamesJessee(I20174)who is in the 1880
census of Daniel & Eleanor Smyth Jessee:
1880 precinct 5, Carter Co, KY census #5-Daniel Jessee b. 1830 VAVA/VA &
Eleanor Jessee b. 1810 VA VA/VA with 1 child:James b. 1868 KYVA/VA

At the same time there is doubt that James(I20174) is Daniel's as hedoesnot
appear in their 1870 census & Eleanor would have been approx 58 yrsoldwhen he was
born, but he could be their child:
1870 precinct 5, Carter Co, KY census #116-Daniel Jesse b. 1829 VA&Nelly

Jim

I found your site and research to be exceptional. I was able togothrough the entire lineage of Lottie Jessee, my wife'sgrandmother.However, on her grandfather's side, you only have TomDavis when in fact(so I am told) his full name was Thomas JeffersonDavis. I have no otherinformation on him at this time.

Thomas and Lottie had several daughters and sons. My wife'smother(Mabel Marie Davis) was one of them. She married Carl C.Compton (son ofHenry Compton). They had two daughters and one son. Mywife, Marsha GailCompton is one daughter who has subsequent surnamesof Harmon, Bechtolt(no children) and now Fuzia. One son, Brian S.Bechtolt (Harmon bybirth). Brian is married to a Denise Hatfield(Southbury CT) and has onedaughter (Eva G. Bechtolt). The Harmonfamily is from Bluefield, VA;Bechtolts from Oregon and my familyprimarily originating from NYS havingimmigrated from Prussia andAustrian-Hungarian Empires at the turn of thecentury. We have nobiological children.

Marsha's GGF on her mother's father's side was John William Purcell,Born1842, Died 1927 and was from Russell County. He was a CSA veteranof the29th and 44th Virginia Infantry Regiments who was awarded theSouthernCross of Honor. I believe Marsha's great grandmother was MaryElizabethPurcell, daughter of John. It is also my belief that hergrandfather'sname was carried throughout as Thomas Jefferson Davisoriginating fromthe eastern TN area. Her GGF may have been a Captain(CSA) in the 8thTenn Infantry, though with the scant information Ihave available rightnow makes everything uncertain.

A relative (unknown as to what relation) was James Calhoun Davis.

I could try and supply you with additional information if you wouldtellme just what you would need or like to add to this lineage line.It ismy hope that someday these lineages can be properly documented.

When we retire and move back to our Bluefield home, we plan onattending"Jessee Days" as do many of our family from the region. As along timecivil war cavalry reenactor, I am especially interested inseeing thatall of my wife's ancestors who served in the CSA areproperly honored. Iplan on a personal ceremony on the sacred groundat Gettysburg on theanniversary of her GGU's (Jefferson Davis) deathon July 4, 1863 as aresult from Pickett's Charge.

Once again, your work is truly outstanding and I sincerelyappreciateyour sharing it with me.

Respectfully

Bill

I just happened to be looking something up on one of our JHFmembersJacki Volkanovich. Her great great grandparents are John TivisJesseeand America E. Bickley. Her grand father is Robert Edward LeeJessee.When I looked at the marriage date for John and America Inoticed youhave a different date than I do. My date is Feb 2, 1869 Ihave a copy ofthe page from the Russell County Marriage Husbands bookand it is clearlyFeb 2, 1869. Book 2
page 28 line 14. I also have another source listed but I do not haveacopy of this source Book 2 Page 137 Line 69.

Source: Tom Rudder (Oct 1998) provides an extract of the 1860 FloydCo.,KY Census, listing a John Jessee, age 24, laborer, who hespeculates isJohn Tivis Jessee, son of John Jessee Jr. I am doubtful,although thiscould be our John T., who is visiting or has joined hisuncle, JohnJessee III. In any event, he is back in Russell Co., in1861 when hejoins the 29th Virginia Infantry.

Source: "29th Virginia Infantry" by John Perry Alderman, H.E.Howard,Inc., Lynchburg, VA.

John Tivis was a Civil War officer under Robert E. Lee: Co. A,29thVirginia Vol. Infantry, CSA. He served througout the Civil War,joiningshortly after the outbreak in 1861. Enlisted 7/10/1861 inRussell as 1stSargeant; reenlisted 4/62; commissioned 2nd Lieutenant5/13/62; promoted1st Lieutenant 6/3/62; present 6/62 and 10/62; ondetail 12/62 gatheringabsentees; then present 2/63 thru 12/64 oftencommanding the company;Wounded in action probably 4/1/65 at FiveForks; shot in right foot;hospitalized at Farmville 4/2/65; paroledthere abt 4/15/1865.
He participated in the engagements at Cold Harbor, Corinth,CulpepperCourt-house, and Suffolk, Virginia. He received a gunshotwound in theright foot just two days before the surrender of Lee, atAppomattoxCourthouse.
He was so crippled from his wound that he was compelled to usecrutchsfor three years afterwards. John's brother Timothy served inthe sameunit and was shot in the shoulder and eye at Cold Harbor,furlouged homehe died a few months later. John's brother EphraimKiser also served inthis unit.

The book "After the War is Over" by Stephen Birmingham mentionsCol.Jessee. Colonel Jessee is supposed to be mentioned in the "RedBadge ofCourage" although we cannot find any such reference. Heappears amongstthe names listed as Lee's Officers at the time of hissurrender at theAppomattox Court House National Monument. They wereengaged in afirefight the very morning of their surrender.

After the Civi War, John Tivis married America Elizabeth Bickley andin1869 they came by wagon to Tolono,IL. Elizabeth Strother hascarvedkitchen tools made by John Tivis, as well as photos of him inhisConfederate Uniform. Clyde Bickley has the Bickley family bibleand aBickley family table cloth made at Sugar Hill, Castlewood, VA.

Source: He is listed in the "Portrait and Biographical Album ofChampaignCounty, Illinois," Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1887, as aresident ofCrittenden Township. His biography, as extracted by Mark R.Kiser (23 Mar1998), from that book follows:

JOHN TIVIS JESSEE. This gentleman, who is a resident ofCrittendenTownship, is a native of Russell County, Va., where he firstopened hiseyes to the light on the 7th of August, 1836. His parents,Joseph andCynthia (Smith) Jessee, were natives of the same county andState astheir son, where they resided after their marriage on a farmuntil thedeath of the father when he was fifty-two years of age. Themother isstill living in her native county, having now arrived at theadvanced ageof eighty-three years, and enjoys remarkably good healthfor one of herage. Her mental facilities likewise are wonderfullypreserved. Since hereightieth birthday she has frequently saddled ahorse and ridden over thecountry, leaping over the fences as when agirl. The household circle wascompleted by the birth of eightchildren, who grew to man and womanhood.Of these, Tabitha is nowdeceased; Timothy was a soldier in Co. A, 29thVa. Vol. Inf., C. S. A.,and in a skirmish near Richmond received a woundwhich caused hisdeath; Mary became the wife of D. Gilmore, Ephraim K.was the secondson; Silvesta married Mr. John Percel; Eliza is the wifeof JohnBrowning; Eunice married A. Smith; John T. is our subject.

The subject of our sketch was reared with his brothers and sisters onthehomestead, and after the outbreak of the Rebellion, in 1861, becameasoldier in the Southern army, enlisting in Co. A., 29th Va. Vol.Inf., inwhich he served until the surrender of Gen. Lee. Heparticipated in theengagements at Cold Harbor, Corinth, Culpepercourt-house and Suffolk,Va. Two days before the surrender of Lee, hereceived a gunshot wound inthe right foot which disabled him so thathe was compelled to usecrutches for three years afterward. Afterreceiving his discharge hereturned to his home in the Old Dominion,where he remained until 1869,and then came to Illinois, locating uponthe tract of land in CrittendenTownship, which constitutes his presenthomestead. Here he has 120 acreslying on section 4, under a good stateof cultivation, and supplied withall the buildings and otherappliances essential to a modern farm estate.

Before coming to this county Mr. Jessee was married, in the springof1869, in Russell County, Va., to Miss America E. Bickley, who wasanative of that county, born in 1853, and the daughter of JamesandEveline (Bartee) Bickley. Their six living children, all born inthiscounty, are as follows: Robert L., Minne E., Belle, Grace,Clarence andNellie. The two deceased are John B. and James B.

Our subject and his wife are both sincere believers in theChristianreligion, and Mrs. Jessee is a worthy member of the BaptistChurch. Mr.Jessee politically supports the principles of theDemocratic party; hasserved as Supervisor of his township one term,and was School Trustee fora period of six years.

694. George Washington Jessee

Source: DAR Record 688012 A683, submitted by Rosemarie WalkerClark,Chesterland, OH, 3/7/1989, provides pedigree and descendants ofGeorgeWashington Jessee.

There is some confusion here regarding Jefferson "Jeoff" andGeorgeWashington, who may be two different or the same child, orperhaps atwin.

Further confusion can be generated if one considers that this could beaGeorge Lea Jessee too.

Source: 1860 Carter Co., KY, Page 268, lists George and his wife"Libey"(both age 30, b. VA), and Ellen (7, b. VA), Elizabeth (5, b.VA), andWilliam (2).

Here's what puzzles me--Nelly andArcher had a son, Jefferson"Jeoff" (George W.) Jessee. He was born inabout 1830. Nancy CountsJessee's gravestone
reads that her first husband was Jefferson Jessee (born about 1830).Italso says she was born 21 January 1861 and died 22 August 1911. Sothiscould mean that Nancy's first husband was the son of Elanore,Daniel'sfirst wife, and Elanore's first husband, Archer."

of George. W. Jessie, b. 1910, d. 2003, son of Robert Lee Jessie,b.1871,
d. 1931, son of George W. Jessee, b. 1829.
I went looking for more info on the elder George W. and found thisrecordin your database.
I am admittedly new at this so I'm not sure how to add to any ofthat,but
there was at least one more child after 1869 because my g.grandfatherwas
born in 1871, Robert Lee. He had 10 children with Bunnie AkersJessie,one
of whom is my grandfather George W. Sybil also lived with him formany
years until her death.
I have more info about the Jessie/Jessee family - at least aboutRobert's
(he was known as Lee to the family) descendants if you're interested.

I noticed as I was reading through the database trying to pick upsomenew clues that there was some question that George WashingtonJessee andAndrew Jackson Jessee might be twins or the same person(sons of ArcherJessee and Eleanor Smyth).

I don't think there's any doubt that they're twins. The 1850 censushasthem both listed in Russell County, Virginia living with Nellyage40...I'm pretty sure Nelly would be a pet name for Eleanor. And,itseems as though the census taker made a notation on the censusindicatingthey were twins (there's a curly bracket connecting bothnames). I thinkbrother and sister, John and Mary, are also twinsbecause they're thesame age, and similarly notated.

Both George and Andrew are living in Carter County, Kentucky by the1870census...Andrew is there as just Jackson Jessee. Interestinglyenough,they both have first daughters born very closely together andboth namedMartha Ellen.

If you remember, I descend from George Washington Jessee...I'm fillinginholes now.

Also, you have some notes of mine listed under Robert Lee JessiewhereI'm referring to stories about my grandfather...Robert Lee wasmygreat-grandfather and the stories refer to his son, George W.Jessie.Don't know that it matters but wouldn't want the readers to getconfused.

I wasn't sure if you updated those types of things but I thought I'dletyou know.

Thanks.

Sybil "Sibby" (Sylvesta Ibba) Harris/ /Sabilla

Source: Jo Dee Biddle [mailto:jdbiddle@msn.com]
Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 5:14 PM
I had in my file a more approximate death date for Sybil Harris,marriedto Geo. W. Jessee. She would have died sometime between 1910and 1920.The 1910 Census shows her living with (Robert) Lee Jessie atage 83. I'msure the age is wrong in that census because she was bornabout 1830 andthat would make her closer to 80. By the 1920 census,she was notlisted.

One thing I think that's making it very difficult to trace her ishername. It is not spelled the same across 5 censuses:
1860 = Sibey
1870 = Sylvesta
1880 = Sybil
1900 = Sabilla
1910 = Ibba

I e-mailed the Carter Co. KY message board about a year ago tryingtofind out who were the parents of my gg-grandpa, Cowan Jessee.EvidentlyCowan was a popular name in the Jessee generations.
I received 3 replies about that. All of them told me different. Ihavesince been contacted by a Jessee 1st cousin of my grandpa, whothroughhim, I have found what I wanted to know. He saw one of mymessages at aJessee website. I could hardly believe my grandpa couldhave 1st cousinsstill living since my grandpa, was born in Feb. 1890(113 years ago). The1st cousin of his who contacted me is 83. This waspossible because myg-grandmother, Mollie, was next to the oldestchild, and the cousin'smother, Ruby (Jessee) was the baby of thefamily, and was born the monthafter their mother turned 45.

My paternal grandpa was James Leslie Mowery, son of EdmondMowry/Mowery,1865 - 1898, and Mollie (Jessee), 1870 - 1949.
Mollie was the daughter of Cowan Jessee, b. March 7, 1846, and NancyE.(Harris) July 18, 1850 - April 17, 1928.
Cowan's parent's were, Archable 'Arch' Jessee and Elanor 'Nelly'(Smyth).
'Arch's' parent's were, John Jessee and Mary 'Polly' (Armstrong). Ihavea couple more generation names, but you probably already knowthose.

A Chris Mowery, who is not related to the Jessee's, has posted infothatMollie's name is Mary, but I have no evidence that is true, I'veneverheard her refered to as anything but, Mollie and that is what ison hergravemarker and the death records of KY.
I also found 'Mollie' age 10, along with her parent's Cowan and'Nellie'.and the older children of the family in the 1880 census. Onthat census'Mollie is listed as, 'May E'. Jessee, but I think this mayhave been amisunderstanding of the census taker. The Jessee's werefrom Virginia andwere now in Kentucky, and I think few people couldread and write at thattime.
Here is a listing of the children of Cowan Jessee and Nancy E.(Harris):
James 'Jim' Jessee, b. 1868 - 1951 (married Ailean Ross)
"Mollie', b. 1870 - 1949 (married Edmond Mowery)
Sena (Lucina)? b. abt 1873
Lockard, 1878 - 1940
Lucrecy (Lucretia)? b. 1880 (married John Hawes)
Georgia Ann, b. 1884 (m. ? Pyles)
Arch, b. 1885 - 1917
John, b. 1893 - 1939
Dick, b. ?
Ruby, b. 1895 (married, (1) George Hutchinson & (2) ? Riggs)

There is also a Celia, 6 yr old, and a Bill 10 mos. listed on the1880census as their children, but no one that I know, living, know ofthem.Maybe they died as children. I'm told by the older cousin thathis mothertold him of a girl being burned and died, but he don't knowwho she was.
I have pictures of the gravemarkers for most of the Jessee'shere,including Cowan and Nancy. I also have 'live' pictures of Mollie,James'Jim', and Ruby.
I am hoping to someday find a picture of Cowan and Nancy, becausetheydied in 1920 and 1928, so there may be a picture of themsomewhere.

I'm here for any questions you might have, however I can't takecreditfor the detail, Ed Morton is the one that has done thetravelling andread the gravestones, also Iva Jessee is another onethat has done sovery much in this line. She has been a wealth ofinformation to us all.
I do have some rememberances that my aunt wrote down as mygrandmotherLeatha was rambling through her past, in the nursing home.
As far as My surname, well we are working hard on that end of thefamilyas well so far we can only get the Moccabee name back as far as1810, Iam going to get in volved with the McCabe genealogy forum, tosee what Ican do there, but I haven't done that as yet. We were alwaystold thattwo brothers migrated from Wales and that all the Moccabeesin northamerica were descended from these two. Nice story, how muchtruth thereis to it, we don't know, however we do have a suspect ortwo, as to whothe brothers were.
There is a theory that the lost tribes of Israel are that theymigratednorth to the Caucus Mountains in Russia and then about 100years laterthere was a migration west to the British Isles, includingWales. Fromwhat I have been told of the Welsh language the double cwould carry aphonetic sound very similar to the Hebrew ch as inChaim. So who knows,maybe someday we can trace back to Judas Maccabeeshimself. probably notin my lifetime, though.

Here is what I have on Eliza Jane Williams, starting with herparents,which is where I dead end on that branch. But it takes thetree on downto My grandson, that latest generation. [Jack providedextensivedescendants information for Eliza Jane Williams and JohnJessee, much ofwhich is recorded here.]
