James Bevins

He was the first sheriff of Pike Co., KY. There has been three men hanged in Pike Co., One was "Old Negro Edd" who burned a woman and child up in a house on Slones Branch. James Bevins hanged him on Elem St. in Pikeville in 1844.Elem St. has since been changed to Elm St.

Military Service : Between 1861-1865, 2nd Leutenant Company K, 62nd North Carolina Confederate Infantry. KIA in Asheville, N.C. "No braver or more noble hearted men ever lived than those composing the 62nd North Carolina Regiment ofInfantry". Last unit to surrender. Refused Union Oath.

Occupation: Plantation Owner. Property: June 6, 1845, Kentucky Land Grants, Vol. I, Part 2, Chapter X- Page 1419. 100 acres on Louisa Fork. Book 18 page 71, surveyed, Pike County.

Residence: 1892, In History of Logan County, by Major Henry Clay Ragland C.S.A. & Founder of the Logan Banner.

His wife and children are listed alone in 1870 in Pike Co., KY. Census.

Military Service: Between 1861-1864, Private 6th North Carolina Confederate Calvary (65 State Troops), Company D/22nd South Carolina Infantry, Company D. Captured June 2, 1864. Died August 27, 1864 at Point Lookout Prison, MD.

From "The Big Sandy Valley" by William Ely, written in 1887, states that Flemming Justice made brick in Hamton City.
