Following information from Joel Hager <hagerj@us.army.mil>
Claims birth of T. J. Maggard: 18 APR 1850 in Pikesville, Pike County, Kentucky

Thomas Jefferson Maggard was born and raised in Pikeville, KY., but fled the state after he was indicted for shooting a Constable in the stomach. I don't know the details of the shooting or the extent of the man's injuries.

After he fled KY, he met Julia Carter over in WV and fell in love and they married. For a while they lived in Middleton OH, and I know that they have one son buried there. They lost 2 sons when they were babies and then they had five children who lived. They saw all of their children die except for their son
William (Willie).

He and Julia lived in a hued log cabin at the head of Twelve Pole Creek on the East Fork in Mingo County WV. There was only one room and a porch ran down the side of it with one end boxed in for use as a kitchen. There were two door that went straight through. There was no outside privy, they went out behind the barn and by the pig pens. Outside the house was a 2 stall barn with a corn crib to the side. They kept a mule in one stall and cows in the other.

There wasn't much in the way of furnishings there: one eating table and some straight back chairs, three beds, (Thomas got the one by the fireplace) and a stove and another table in the kitchen to work on and do dishes, and one cabinet which was boated up the Guyan River in a push boat by Thomas back before the railroads.

Thomas's father John, and brother Henry were both killed in the Civil War which left Thomas as the head of the family. His mother's name was Louisa Sowards born in 1814. Times were so hard he used to plow the fields with no shoes on.

He was a very strict and serious man. Dinner time was a very formal time and no talking was allowed at the table. He had Granny Julia set the table as formally as their possessions allowed.

Thomas was foreman of the jury that acquitted Sid Hatfield in the famous Matewan Massacre trial. He was gone 93 days and when he came back he had his horse loaded down with all the goods it could carry from the general store in Matewan. He never would talk about the trial in front of Lenora so those stories are lost.

His picture is in the Book 'Thunder in the Mountains' by Lon Savage that tells all about the mine wars and the trial and the murder of Sid Hatfield on the courthouse steps in Welch where he was facing another trial.

When ole Tom Maggard died everyone was so poor the neighbor man made his coffin and it looked like a store bought one and I can't remember if she said Mommy or Aunt Lizzie got out the satin and lined the coffin just like a sote bought one with little pleats and everything. We did him up just like up town and buried him on the hill behind the house. That's why you can't find any death record on him. They were all to poor to go to town and register his death.
