1810. John W. Combs

OBIT
Saturday night of this week, the life of John W. Combs, life long citizen and resident of the Rockhouse section, passed on from this life to the life beyond.
He was about 74 years of age and was the son of George and Millie Maggard Combs. Upwards to fifty years ago, he met and was married to Matilda Madden and to this union were born nine children, three of which preceded him in death, six now living to survive him, who are: Herman, Clark and Howard of the Whitesburg Wholesale Co., and Denver, who is in the mercantile business at Hustonville, Kentucky; Mrs. Fulton Banks of Whitesburg; and Mrs. Bruce May of Lexington. Three children, Hobart, Henry and Mattie preceded him in death. He also leaves three brothers, Stephen, of Bardsltown; Shade of Ison; and Henry of Whitesburg; two sisters, Mrs. Polly Ann Adkins of Isom and Mrs. Betty Combs of Montgomery Creek.
John Combs was related to the first families and was tied kith and kin to the stalwart citizenship of the early forebearers of our county. He came up at a time when opportunities were scarce, but by hard work and sheer
managment, he was able to accumulate a good living, educate his children and help them. Early in life he became a school teacher, taught school for many years, then later engaged in the mercantile business, having a store near
his home at Isom. For some time his health had not been the best and more than two months ago, he was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington where he underwent an operation from which he rallied and seemingly was on the way to recovery. His family brought him back home where indications pointed that he would get well, but Saturday night of last week his condition became worse and he soon passed on.
In his last weeks and months of life he became a praying man, sought an interest in heavenly things and began to lose sight of the earthly and material things here. He said to the writer more than a year ago that he was trying to live right.
John Combs was a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good neighbor
and a good citizen and one that worked hard taking care of his own affairs
and stuck close to his home, he seldom left his home except in cases of
business. In his passing, not only his family has lost a good father and his
wife a good husband, but the neighbors and citizens of that section of the
county and the conty as a whole feels the loss in the passing of such a good
citizen. We regret to see them go. Like the oak of the forest that withstood
the storms and winds in the way of protection for the younger ones that grow
beneath its sturdy branches, likewise these strong sturdy pioneer citizens
have stood as a beacon and as a protection for the younger citizenship and
their passing is a loss that cannot be filled. In his passing, we know that
God's will must be done and that He does all things right.
Monday of this week, at the school house near his home, in the presence of
his family and friends, final services were held. The following ministers
took part in the services: Rev. W. H. Poore, J. T. Sudduth, G. B. Adams, W.
S. Akers and J. M. Webb. The active pall bearers were: Stephen Combs, Jr.,
Dr. B. C. Bach, Kermit Combs, French Hawk, Clyde Reeves, G. D. Polly, Dr. S.
M. Childers and John Banks. Honorary Pall Bearers were: W. E. Cook, L. W.
Banks, John McIntosh, John Adams, Gordon Gray, Corbin Ison, T. L. Webb, W.
D. Adkins, Oscar Hogg and J. M. Day. Flower Girls were: Mrs. C. M. Bowen,
Mrs. John McIntosh, Mrs. Jim Hall, Mrs. Toby Rawlings, Mrs. French Hawk,
Mrs. Gale Whitaker, Mrs. Dewey Polly, Mrs. F. G. Ison, Mrs. Stephen Combs,
Jr., Mrs. W. H. Lewis, Mrs. Walter Enlow and Mrs. C. C. Ison.
After the funeral services, burial took place in the beautiful family plat
on the knoll overlooking his home and boyhood play ground. The Craft Funeral
Home had charge of the burial.
