The Story of Sampy Shortt
This is the story of my great-grandpa, Sampy Shortt as told to me by my grandmother, Goldie Sabin. This story was told from her memories of her childhood.

Sampy Short was born January 8, 1891 and died August 31, 1920. He married Laura Lucinda Church and
they had five children. Their first son was stillborn. His name was Hansford. Then came Goldie, Guy,
Earl, and Lockie. Sampy worked as a gunsmith and moonshiner.

While still in his early twenties, Sampy lost a leg. His knee was thirty inches around and Laura had to
cut the knee out of his pants so they would fit. When the leg was operated on, it was said the bone
looked like a honeycomb. They amputated his leg as close to the hip as possible. I am only guessing
that he had bone cancer. He walked on crutches the rest of his life.

Grandma was ten years old when her father was murdered. He was killed because he owned the property and lived in the last house at the foot of the mountain on Bad Creek. The road from the house ran to where the Gilley schoolhouse sat. Willy Fuller and Riley Gilley wanted the property because it was a good place to hide a still and make moonshine whiskey. These two men paid Edmond Bolling five dollars and a gallon of moonshine whiskey to kill Sampy. He was shot once in each hand because he was on crutches and three times in the back. The doctor was brought to the house, but he made no attempt to remove the bullets as he said it was useless. Sampy died twenty four hours after being shot. Grandma was sent to get her grandpa who lived two miles away. She took a shortcut across the Fuller property.

Her cousin, Arvel Church, came out and asked where she was going. When told what had happened and
where she was going, he told her to go back home and he would go to her grandpa's for her. At this time
Willey Fuller came out with a gun and told Arvel if he left he would shoot him. Grandma ran on to her
grandpa's house. She and her grandpa road back to her house on a horse.

Edmond Bolling gave himself up and confessed to the killing and about being paid by Fuller and Gilley to kill Sampy. Edmond received a life sentence, but Gilley and Fuller were never indicted. Bolling was later released on parole and he killed again.

At the age of 29 Sampy Shortt was laid to rest in the Flat Gap cemetery.
