Eric Douglas Back died January 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY after a long illness. He was 39 years old. Born in Letcher County, KY, he was a son of the late Edna Jane Back, a nephew of the late Tommy Back, and a grandson of the late Marlin and Golden Smith Back. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and the outdoors. Survivors include a son, Zachery Douglas Back, Blackey, KY; two daughters, Cassie Nicole Back and Tiffany Michelle Back, both of Blackey, KY; an aunt, Jean Arthur Blair, Blackey, KY; and two uncles, Joe Arnold Back and Dorse Back, both of Blackey, KY. Former Millstone resident Hershel Back, 84, of Covington, KY, died April 28, 2008. Back was a retired machinist from Ford Motor Company, and a U.S Army veteran of World War II where he served on D-Day and was promoted to sergeant in the field. He was a member of the Latonia Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge of Covington, and United Auto Workers. Surviving him are his wife, Barbara Potter Back; two sons, Hershel V. Back and Darrel W. Back, both of Independence; two sisters, Blanche Byrd, Somerset, KY, and Nancy Lee Arnold, Roanoke, Va.; three brothers, Virgil Back, Newport News, Va.; Ivan Back, Michigan; and Kelly "Junior" Back, Carrollton; 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delecia "Lisa" Haddix. Funeral services will be held May 2, 2008. Burial will be in the Floral Hills Cemetery in Covington, KY. Ray M. Back, 86, of Blackey, KY, died May 30, 2007 at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, Hazard, KY. Mr. Back was a member of the Letcher County Board of Education for 24 years. He was chairman of the board for 17 years. Mr. Back was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret "Mag" Dixon Back. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Back; a son, Joseph R. Back, of Blackey; two brothers, Reedus Back, of Morehead, and John Back, of Lexington, KY; three sisters, Irene Brown, of Whitesburg, KY, Minerva Craft, of Walton, KY, and JoAnn Walters, of Blackey, KY; and a grandson, Matthew. Verniece Caudill Bakun died at her home in Lompoc, Calif., on January 21, 2008. She was 79 years old. Born at Van, KY, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Sophie Jefferson Caudill. She was a sister of the late Emery Titus Caudill, Millard Arlie Caudill, Willie Earl Caudill, and Violet Dean Fish. Mrs. Bakun was graduated from Lee's College and taught school in Letcher County, KY. Later she served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Sergeant's Association, and the Women's Air Force Memorial in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Angels Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Albert Joseph Bakun; a son, Michael Joseph; a brother, Laurel Caudill, Lake Bluff, Ill.; and two sisters, Zola Pansy Ratliff, Premium, KY, and Virginia Frazier, Cocoa, Fla. Bentley, Edgar

Edgar Bentley, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Hospice Care Center. He was 85. Born on October 14, 1922, at Democrat, KY, in Letcher County, he was a son of the late Henry and Cordelia Martin Bentley. Edgar served in World War II from 1941-1945. He was a coal miner for 15 years and later worked 25 years at the University of Kentucky as a maintenance foreman. He is survived by his wife Lois and two children, Gordon Bentley of Lexington, KY, and Teresa Bentley of Salvisa, KY. He is also survived by one brother, Henry of Lake Park, GA, and one sister, Bonnie Craft of Whitesburg, KY. Funeral services will be 10am Friday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main St. by Brother Alan Dodson. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-8pm Thursday. Bryant, Shelia

Shelia Bryant of Duffield, Va., died unexpectedly November 1, 2007 at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va., just days short of her 50th birthday. She was a daughter of the late Wafard and Jackie Hall Bryant, and a sister of the late Jeffrey Bryant. She worked at the I.U. in Duffield, and at the greenhouse in Big Stone Gap. Surviving are five sisters, Rita B. Hall, Pittsboro, Ind.; Kathryn Friend, Morristown, Tenn.; Judy Webb and husband Jimmy, Wise, Va.; Elinda Fields and husband Kenneth and Deborah Bryant, all of Neon; a brother, Eddie Bryant, Neon; and 16 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held November 4, 2007 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Whitesburg, KY. Burke, Bucky Eugene

Former Letcher County Sheriff's Deputy Bucky Eugene Burke died September 18, 2007 in Brunswick, Ga. He was 36 years old. Born in Michigan, he was a son of Jerry and Dora Farley of Abingdon, Va., and was a 1988 graduate of Jenkins High School. He attended East Tennessee State University of Johnson City, Tenn. Burke was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 82nd Airborne during both Operate Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He became a Letcher County deputy sheriff in 1993 and also was police chief in Loyall and a police officer with the Veterans Administration Police in Danville, Ill. He was transferred to the Veterans Administration Police in Mountain Home, Tenn., and in 2003 joined the U.S. Marshals Service stationed in the District of Columbia with the District Court. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Renattia Burke, Bristol, Tenn.; a son, Logan Burke; two stepsons, Caleb Gilliam and Justin Gilliam; a brother, Jerry Ray Farley; and a half-sister, Rhonda Abel. Funeral services were held September 23 in Highlands Fellowship Church in Abingdon, Va. Burial was in Forest Hills Memory Garden. Burke, Sarah Elizabeth

Sarah Elizabeth Burke, 89, of McRoberts, KY, died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at her home. She was born in Pike County, KY, April 4, 1919, a daughter of the late Silas and Inas Cook Tackett. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Ray of Neon, KY and James Arnold of Ervington; two daughters, Barbara Morgan and Vivian Sergent, both of McRoberts, KY; one brother, Burnette Tackett of Deane, KY; two sisters, Aileen Meade and Ollie Sexton, both of Jackhorn, KY; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church with Elder Robert Wagner officiating. Entombment followed in the Green Acres Cemetery, Ermine, KY. Arrangements were under direction of Carty Funeral Home, of Neon, KY.

Burkich, Ruby Hogg

Funeral services for Ruby Hogg Burkich, 84, of Whitesburg, KY, were held September 15, 2008 at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine, KY. Born at Blackey, she was a daughter of the late Leslie and Annie Cornett Hogg. She was also preceded in death by eight brothers and four sisters. After graduation from Eastern Kentucky University in 1948, Mrs. Burkich was employed for two years by the university in the Rural Demonstration School mentoring student teachers. She taught at Stuart Robinson School, and in the Bardstown Independent School System. She retired from the Letcher County Schools in 1981. She was active in the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church and the choir, and was a member and officer of the Pine Mountain Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a two-term president of the Whitesburg Woman's Club. Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Jack Burkich; a son, Michael, and wife Pam; a daughter, Jennifer, and partner Marie; a granddaughter, Rebecca; and a sister, Recie Sowder. Letcher Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Burton, Eugene

Eugene Burton, 78, of Partridge, KY, died August 30, 2007 at the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville. Born in Owsley County, KY, he was a son of the late Wilson and Lillie Smith Burton. He was married to the late Imogene Scott Burton, and was the father of the late Saundra Kay Burton. Burton was a retired coal miner and had worked for 36 years for U.S. Steel Corporation. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a honorary Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and attended Lewis Creek Pentecostal Church and Sandhill Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Sept. 2 at the Lewis Creek Pentecostal Church. Burial was in the Scott Oakland Cemetery at Cumberland. Surviving are four children, Donnie Burton and wife Rhonda, Linda Craiger, Debi Sexton and husband Billy, and Sharon "Doodle Bug" Burton; five grandchildren, Jami Benning, Donnie Ray Burton, Andrew Burton, Tre Sexton, and Jacob Craiger; four great-grandchildren, David Benning, Braydon Burton, Jade Burton, and Zachary Austin; a brother, Hubert Burton; and a sister, Wanda Collier.
