A son of the late Lloyd and Nora Calahan Calihan, he died November 20, 2007 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, Letcher Co KY. He was the father of the late Bruce Allen Calihan and Ira Gay Calihan. Carmack, Lewis

Lewis Carmack, born March 22, 1950 in Upper Second Creek, departed this life on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY. He was 58 years, four months and three days of age at the time of his passing. He was the son of the late Jeff and Nola Lee Carmack, and by occupation he was retired from the Kentucky Power Company. He enjoyed deer hunting and was a member of the Christopher Church of God. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dean Carmack. He leaves the following relatives surviving: wife, Peggy Carmack of Hazard, KY; son Jason Carmack of Geneva, Oh.; step son Franklin of Lexington, KY; sister Glenna Stone and husband Larry of Geneva, OH; grandchildren Leah, Preston, Dusty, and Kirstin; nieces Jessica and Megan; and two great nieces and one great nephew; and special friend Sam Whitaker. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home in Hazard, KY with Rev. Fred S. Ballard officiating. The burial followed in the Combs Family Cemetery in Christopher, KY.

Carroll, Esther Bernice Oliver

Esther Bernice Oliver Carroll, affectionately known as “Aunt Bernice” of Centre, Al. passed away Monday, July 28, 2008. “Aunt Bernice” was born March 20, 1917 in Hazard, KY to the late William White and Opsie Davidson Oliver. She graduated from nursing school as a registered nurse in 1945 and retired from Industrial Nursing with International Paper in Panama City, Fl. in 1981. She was an advocate of volunteer service in community and served with AARP, Widowed Persons Services and the American Red Cross for many years after retiring. She is preceded in death by her husband Benson James Carroll. She is survived by three children Barbara Rich of Cushing, Ok.; Belinda Pringle of Centre and one son, Benson James Carroll II of Carmel Valley, Ca.; four grandchildren, Andrew Barron Jackson III of Tampa, Fl.; Brian David Jackson of Jacksonville, Fl.; Carroll Deahl Wilson of Peachtree City, Ga.; Michael Rich of Knoxville, Tn.; two great granddaughters, Madelyn Nichole Jackson of Jacksonville and Claire Elizabeth Wilson of Peachtree City. The funeral service was held Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the Union Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Christopher Padgett officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with James and Lipford Funeral Home directing. The family requests memorials be made in her memory to your local American Red Cross Chapter. Carson, Ella Caudill

Ella Caudill Carlson, 93, died September 2, 2008 in St. Marys, Kansas. Born at UZ, KY, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Martha Caudill. She was the widow of Roy Carlson. Mrs. Carlson attended grade school in Whitesburg, and moved to Kansas in 1931. She taught grade school in a one-room school in Kansas. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Sunflowers Club, and the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Carl L. Carlson and wife Judy and Richard D. Carlson and wife Cheryl, all of St. Marys; a brother, Edwin Caudill, Whitesburg; six grandchildren, Douglas Carlson and wife Carrie, Carl Carlson and wife Kaylyn, Terri Sudakar and husband Paul, Carolyn Adams and husband Clay, Brian Carlson and wife Angie, and R.D. Carlson and wife Kody; 13 great-grandchildren, and a great-greatgrandchild. Funeral services were held September 5, 2008 in St. Marys. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery.

Cates, Barry

Barry Cates, 72, died August 29, 2007 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, KY. Born in Granville County, N.C., he was a son of the late Erwin and Allie Mae Hall Cates. He was the father of the late Albert Cates and Chris Cates. Cates was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for 30 years at the John Umstead Hospital in Buckner, N.C. He retired in 1997. Surviving are two sons, Barry Cates Jr., Ivel, and Andy Cates, Sandlick, KY; four daughters, Rhonda Adams, Sergent, KY; Michelle Fleming, Mayking, KY; Lisa Gibson, Prestonsburg; and Shondra Banks, Craft's Colly, KY; a brother and two sisters; 19 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Cecil R. Caudill, 81, were held April 4, 2008 at the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Whitesburg, KY. Burial was in the Webb Cemetery at Mayking, KY. A son of the late Frank B. and Lily Hammonds Caudill, he died April 1, 2008, just one week short of his 82nd birthday. He was the brother of the late Ann C. Holbrook. Caudill was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a 1952 graduate of Georgetown College. He also did graduate work at the University of Kentucky. He taught at Fleming-Neon High School and Whitesburg High School, and retired as manger of the Letcher County ASCS office in 1988. He was a member of the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruby June Adams Caudill; two daughters, Annella C. Larkey and husband David, Columbus, Ga., and Lynne C. Fannin, Nicholasville, KY; four grandchildren, James D. Caudill, Roman "Pete"

Roman "Pete" Caudill, 79, of Fairborn, Ohio, died May 13, 2007. Born in Perry County, KY, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Caudill, and later married Effie Caudill, who survives him. Caudill served in the U.S. Army occupation forces immediately following World War II. He worked at Schwerman Trucking Company, first as a mechanic and later rising to the position of vice president of maintenance. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Fairborn, the F&AM Lodge 754 of Whitesburg, and Rabboni Chapter 232 in Fairborn. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, William Caudill and Jimmy Caudill and wife Sarah; a daughter, Jenny Dillon and husband Terrance; three stepsons, Russell Milliron and wife Suzanne, Robert Milliron, and Peter Milliron and wife Kimberly; two sisters, Carrie Decker and Billy Jean Self and husband Bill; a brother, Tom Caudill; three granddaughters, Kimberly Hoerner, Katrina Dillon, and Kehlen Dillon; two step-granddaughters, Heather Milliron and Hayley Milliron; a great-granddaughter, Emily Hoerner; and a brother-in-law, Ercell Sturgill and wife Sylvia. Collins, Ella Kaye Hammock

Ella Kaye Hammock Collins, 60, of Barbourville, KY, died May 18, 2008. Born at Jenkins, KY, she was a daughter of the late Effie Morgan and Lester Hammock, a sister of the late Tommy Hammock, an aunt of the late Sarah Lisa Hammock and J. Ray Hammock, and a sister-in-law of the late Sammie Hammock. She attended Whitesburg Grade and Whitesburg High schools, and was graduated with a bachelor's of music education from Georgetown College. Mrs. Collins had taught music in the Fayette County School System. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Barbourville where she accompanied the adult choir, played the organ, led the children's choir programs, and taught Bible School. She gave piano lessons for 30 years in her home and at the Barbourville City School. She accompanied the Barbourville Elementary and Barbourville and Knox Central High School choirs, and was an assistant to the Community's Children Chorus. She was a member of the Barbourville Woman's Study Club, the Kentucky Federation of Women's Club, and the Charolette Rock WMU Group at First Baptist Church. She received the KFWC/GFWC Empowered Club Woman of the Year Award for 2008. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideons. Surviving are her husband, Andreae Reed Collins; three children, Andrea Kaye Grubb and husband Paul William Grubb, David Reed Collins and wife Amy Cecil Lynn Liford Collins, and Derek Lester Collins and wife Amy Louise Carnes Collins; grandchildren, Paula Kaye Grubb, Collin William Grubb, Cooper Reed, Cayden Luke Collins, and Ellie Jude Collins; two brothers, Don L. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5829 and American Legion Douglas Day Post 152. He was also a member of the Whitesburg Lions Club for more than 50 years, Masonic Lodge No. 754, and Whitesburg United Methodist Church. Troy Combs, born April 8, 1907, departed this life on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Hazard Nursing Home. He was 101 years, three months and 11 days of age at the time of his passing. He was the son of the late Jim Combs and the late Lou Ann Combs, and by occupation he was a retired coal miner and former employee of the highway department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle Sumner Combs, and several brothers and sisters. He was a lifelong resident of Perry County, KY and was a member of the Sumner Town Old Regular Baptist Church. He leaves the following relatives surviving: sons J.C. Combs of Lotts Creek, KY and Justin Lee Combs of Lotts Creek, KY; daughter Pauline Godsey of Lotts Creek, KY; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home in Hazard, KY with Howard Owens, Bob Combs and Marvin Sparkman officiating. The burial followed in the family cemetery located at Lotts Creek, KY. The visitation was at the funeral home on Monday evening, July 21, 2008.

Janet Conway, born April 30, 1959, departed this life on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center, Hazard, KY. At the time of her passing she was 49 years, three months and one day of age. She was born in Dallas, Texas to Harlan Sumner, Jr. and the late Opal Chaney Sumner. She had been a resident of Perry County, KY for the past 35 years, and by occupation she was the store owner of Jan and Cora’s Grocery. She leaves the following relatives surviving: father, Harlan Sumner, Jr. of Somerset, Ky.; husband James D. Conway of Happy, KY; sons Eric Jeremeny Jent of Leatherwood, KY; brothers Paul Sumner of Letcher County, KY; sisters Shaerrian Noble of Hazard, KY, Teresa Doby of Charlotte N.C. and Janie Ashworth of Somerset, KY; four grandchildren, Hannah Alexis Jent, Megan Hope Jent, Heather Paige Jent and Christopher William Jent. She was born in Martin, KY, June 23, 1946, a daughter of the late Walter Clyde Sr. and Winnie Calton Dingus. Frank Corrello of Whitesburg, KY, died June 4, 2008 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, KY. He was 87 years old. Born at Cromona, KY, he was a son of the late Nick and Pearl Hall Corrello. He was the stepfather of the late James Earl Mohn. Corrello was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he was a medical technician in the European Theater. He was the recipient of four Bronze Stars. He was a stone mason and a member of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church.
