Reubena Elizabeth Burns Rains died January 4, 2008 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, KY. She was 96 years old. Born at Beattyville, KY, she was a daughter of the late John and Ethel Brown Burns and was married to the late Victor Rains. She was the mother of the late Donnie Victor Rains, Ethel Louise Rains Ratliff, and Hazel Mae Jeanette Rains Cote; and the grandmother of the late Michael Lundy. Mrs. Rains was retired after 25 years of service at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, Letcher Co KY. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling, and especially fishing. Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Sue Rains Lundy, Pontiac, Mich.; a son, Jerry David Rains, Fleming, KY; a sister, Eva Mae Burns, Aberdeen, Md.; a brother, John C. Burns and wife Catherine, Aberdeen, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Linda S. Parker Chase Raleigh, infant son of Josh and Aundrea Hensley Raleigh of Lexington, died September 26, 2007 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He was born February 6, 2007 at the Pikeville Medical Center. Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, Dylan Kyle Raleigh, at home; two aunts, Lindsey Hensley, Jeremiah, and Melissa Hensley, Canton, Ohio; an uncle, Jason Raleigh, Vicco; his grandparents, James Darrell and Sheena Hensley, Jeremiah, and Elmer and Nora Raleigh, Vicco; and his great-grandparents, Euretta Jo and Ray Watts, Somerset; June Hensley, also of Somerset; and Juanita Raleigh, Vicco, KY. Ray Raleigh, 80, of Mt. Vernon, KY, formerly of Partridge, died July 23, 2007 at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville, KY after a brief illness. Born at Kingscreek, KY, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, a minister, and a member of Masonic Lodge 754. He was employed for more than 40 years by U.S. Steel Corp. and Arch of Kentucky as a coal miner, mine foreman, and mine superintendent. After his retirement, he moved to a cattle farm in Mt. Vernon, KY. Raleigh was a son of the late Steve G. and Mary Jane Maggard Raleigh. He was the grandfather of the late Kyle Sturgill and Jamey Taulbee. He was married to the late Betty Jo Whitson Raleigh, and after her death married Alice Cornett Raleigh, who survives him. Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, Glenda Pace and husband Tim, Brodhead, KY; Charlotte Shirk and husband Ron, and Peggy Johnson and husband Danny, all of Mt. Vernon, KY; Patty Sokolowski and husband Stanley, Cumberland, KY; and Steve Cornett and wife Sandy, Georgetown, KY; a brother, Robert Eugene Raleigh, Southington, Conn.; a sister, Patsy Nadine Craft, Morehead, KY; a sister-in-law, Blanche Whitson, Danville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Born in Jenkins, KY, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Sr. and Emma Jean Walker and the widow of Charles Ratliff. She was a sister of the late Danny Walker. She died April 4, 2008 in Jenkins, KY. Mrs. Ratliff was a nurse and worked between Jenkins Community Hospital and the Dickenson County Medical Center for more than 24 years. She also worked as a home health nurse. She was a member of the People's Fundamental Baptist Church in Dunham, KY. Riddle, Lora Estele Hale

Funeral services were held this week for Lora Estele Hale Riddle, 96, who died Sept. 12, 2008 in Waynesburg, Ky. Born Dec. 7, 1911 in Whitesburg to the late Lemuel and Hettie Back Hale, Ms. Riddle attended Berea College after graduating from Eubank High School. She was a member of Eubank Baptist Church and worked at Crown Manufacturing in Cincinnati before returning to Lincoln County in the fall of 1949. Ms. Riddle handcrafted quilts for family and friends, and loved gardening and cooking. Survivors include son Stanley Dean Riddle and his wife Johnnie of Waynesburg; grandson Stanley Dewayne Riddle and wife Sarah; great-grandson Jesse Dewayne Riddle; two sisters, Gladys Myers of Cincinnati, and Eula McIntosh and husband Oscar of Batavia, Ohio; step grandsons Barton Harris and wife Melissa, and Eric Harris and wife Abbie; and step granddaughter Becky Long. Also surviving are 10 step great-grandchildren, three nephews, seven nieces, and a lifelong friend of 80 Years, Irene Eoff of Eubank. Services were held at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg. Burial was in Eubank Cemetery.

Riley, Lester Foster Franklin

The Rev. Lester Foster Franklin Riley, 87, of North Vernon, Ind., died September 2, 2008 at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon. Born in Independence, he was a son of the late Grafty Lee and Cordelia Gertrude Tungate Riley. He was the father of the late Kathy Laura Murrell, and a brother of the late Gilbert Riley, G. W. Riley, Charles Allen Riley, Goldie Roberts, Velma Gressik, Marie Hutchinson, Jeanie Webb, Myrtle Riley, Louise Sneed, and Pearl Olson. Riley was a minister in the Old Regular Baptist Church for 50 years, and was employed as a courier for the Indiana State Highway Department for 14 years, McCormack Lumber Company in Franklin, Moir Lumber Company in North Vernon for six years, Pennsylvania Railroad in Cincinnati, Caudill Lumber Company in Ermine, and had been a route driver for Butler Dairy in North Vernon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Matt Hester Post 2021, Blind Veterans Association, Valley Home Regular Baptist Church in Kurtz, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. Funeral services were held September 5, 2008 in North Vernon. Burial was in Valley Home Cemetery. Roberts, Mary E.

Mary E. Roberts, 79, died July 10, 2008 at her residence in Allentown, Penn. Born in Thealka, KY, she was the daughter of the late Ruby Wyatt and Ora Dewey Spears. She was the wife of the late Reade A. Roberts. Mrs. Roberts was graduated as valedictorian of her class at Fleming-Neon High School and attended Union College in Barbourville on a scholarship to study voice. She received her master's degree in education from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn, and taught music in the elementary schools of the Parkland School District for 26 years. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown and a longtime member of the Chancel Choir and several other church-related organizations. She was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, the AAUW and Country Meadows Meadowlarks. Surviving are two sons, David R. Roberts and wife Judith, East Texas, Penn., and H. Gordon Roberts and wife Valerie of Catasauqua, Penn.; five grandsons, Jason and wife Elizabeth, Ryan and wife Leona, Matthew, Alexander and Nicholas; a greatgrandson, Logan brothers, Tom, Dewey, and Steve; and sisters, Phyllis and Janice. She was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Gordon. Memorial services will be held at 1030 a.m., July 26, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown. Linda Darnell Taylor Stratton of Raccoon, KY departed this life Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at her residence, following a three-year battle with breast cancer. Strong, Jack

Jack Strong, age 80, of Hazard, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Hazard Nursing Home, Hazard, KY. He was retired from Lost Mountain Mining. He was the son of the late Lige Strong and the late Della Vermillion Strong. He is survived by his daughters, Janet Sue and Freddie Couch and Jackie Ann and Kenny Miller; sisters Maxine Berryman, Ida Lee Patrick, Gail Begley, and Linda Walters; brother Bob Strong; grandchildren Freddie Couch, Jr., Tommy Campbell and Lee Ann McIntyre; great grandchild Nathan Thomas Campbell; step grandchildren Chrystal Keith and Ami Miller. Three step-great granddaughters and three step-great grandsons and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends also survive him. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel where the family received friends on Thursday, July 24, 2008. The funeral service was conducted at the chapel on Friday, July 25, 2008, with Rev. Clell Miller officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Hazard, KY.

Sturgill, Roy "Bo" II

Funeral services for Roy "Bo" Sturgill II of Mayking, KY, were held January 11, 2008 at the Millstone Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Mayking, KY. Sturgill, 29, died January 8, 2008 after he was thrown from a rock truck he was driving at Cumberland River Coal Company's Blue Ridge surface mine at Oven Fork, KY. He was a son of Roy Douglas and Wanda Sexton Sturgill of Cowan. His grandparents were the late Silas and Juanita Sturgill, and the late Charlie and Wanda Sexton. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Susan Faye Sturgill; a son, Kylar Blake Sturgill, at home; a daughter, Brooklyn Hope Sturgill, at home; and two brothers, Charlie Sturgill, Cowan, KY, and James Alex Sturgill, Ice, KY. Sturgill, Tildon Eugene

Tildon Eugene Sturgill of Cromona, KY, died January 20, 2008. He was 72 years old. A son of the late Leon Bartley Sturgill and Viva Melinda Bolling, he was the widower of Garnell Ruth Sturgill. He was a brother of the late Wayne "Joe" Sturgill, and the great-grandfather of the late Dyana Nicole Arnold. He retired after working in the coal mines for more than 20 years, and was also a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Hemphill Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11139, and was a certified electrician and airplane mechanic. Survivors include six children, Dana Chasteen and husband Nick, Harlan, KY; Rita Jeanette Sturgill, Fairborn, Ohio; Lewis Bates and wife Emily, Pound, Va.; Ronald Bates and wife Peggy, Big Stone Gap, Va.; Kathy Bolling and Stephanie Fox, both of Kansas; a sister, Frances Sturgill Day, Kingscreek, KY; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Marie Bolling. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday), January 23, 2008 at the Hemphill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bolling Cemetery at Flat Gap, KY.
