Bluefield, WV- Alena Nora Romano Caldwell, 93, of Bluefield, WV, died Monday July 19, 2021 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Born February 18, 1928 in Herndon, WV, she was the daughter of the late Domenic Romano and Carrie Banks Romano.
Mrs. Caldwell was a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School and Beaver High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Concord University and pursued a Master’s Degree at West Virginia University. She taught at schools in Beckley, WV, Charleston, WV, and retired after teaching for 23 years in Mercer County.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was past President and Vice President of the Lioness Club, and was a member of Bluefield Country Club and Bluefield Elks Club. She was on the Board of Trustees with the Sons of Italy, was a member of the Pioneer Club, and St. Anne’s Alter Society. Mrs. Caldwell was also a member of Concord Alumni Association, Metropolitan Dinner Club, and the Community Concert Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, L.C. “Corky” Caldwell; sisters, Velma Kathleen, and “Mimi” Rose Amelia; and brother, Joseph Vincent.
Survivors include her children, Mark Caldwell and Sherilyn Beth Hash; grandchildren, Lesley Alena Caldwell, Lydia Beth Hash, and Adam Hash; and cat companions, Gorby and Nino.
A graveside service will be held on Monday July 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Father Sebastian Devasya officiating.

March 19, 1935 - January 7, 2018 - Rose Amelia (Mimi) Romano Spry, 82, lifelong resident of Bluefield, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 7, 2018, after a long illness.
She was born March 19, 1935, to the late Domenic and Carrie Banks Romano. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and homemaker, and co- owner/operator of the former Spry's Super Clean Car Wash, Spry's Coin Laundry, and Richmond Laundrymat.
Mimi loved people and if she met you, you were not a stranger for long. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School 9th grade class in 1950. She graduated from Beaver (Bluefield) High School in 1953 and attended Concord College, majoring in business.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin "Benny" Harrison Spry Jr.; brother Joseph Vincent Romano; sister Velma Kathleen Cox, and stillborn twin son, Baby Boy Spry.
She is survived by her sister Alena Caldwell of Bluefield; sisters-in-law Bonnie Romano of Princeton, W.Va., and Ronell Martin of Athens, W.Va.; and brother-in-law Dennis Spry of Lewisburg, W.Va.; her three sons, Barry H. Spry and wife Reva of Abingdon, Va., Gary R. Spry and wife Wendy of Bristol, Tenn., and J. Greg Spry and partner Laura Chandler of Roanoke, Va. She also leaves behind five grandchildren (sons), Patrick Maiden of Bristol, Tenn., Nick Maiden and wife Sandi of Abingdon, Va., Benjamin Spry and wife Dana of Powell, Tenn., and Eric Spry and Jared Spry of Bristol, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Maiden, Evangeline Spry, and Domenic Spry; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Westwood Center Nursing Home, Medical Services of America, Surgical Care of the Virginia's, Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield Hematology/Oncology Associates, Kindred at Home Health Care, and Hospice Compassus for their care and services during her illness, and the many friends, neighbors, and family for their visits, calls, cards, flowers, and prayers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mimi's honor may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Sacred Heart Food Pantry, P.O. Box 608, Bluefield, W.Va. 24701.
Funeral arrangements are being completed by Mercer Funeral Home, Bluefield, West Virginia. The funeral service will take place on Friday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1003 Wyoming Street, Bluefield, W.Va., with the Reverend Sebastian Devasya officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives from noon to 2 p.m. the day of the service at the church.
Interment will immediately follow the service at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Princeton, W.Va. where the committal service will be conducted in the mausoleum. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and her nephews Mark Caldwell and Ernie Martin.

PFC US Army WWI. Domenic Romano, 99, of Westwood Health Care Center, Bluefield, Va., and formerly of Grandview Avenue, Bluefield, WV, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in the Westwood Health Care Center. Born November 28, 1897 in Locri, Italy, he was a son of the late Joseph and Judith Arteritano Romano.
He came to America in 1913 and was a resident of Bluefield for 65 years. He and his two brothers, Patsy and Jim Romano, were in the construction business for many years, building roads in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, and opening many mines. Patsy Small and Company, as their company was known, became Romano Brothers Construction Company. He later had his own company, Mercer Construction Company.
He was a veteran of World War I, having served with the A.E.F. in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He volunteered for service, having little knowledge of the Entlish language. In 1988 he was awarded a certificate from the French Government, in recognition of his services in World War I. Out of love for his adopted land, he made a substantial gift to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Rehabilitation Fund. he was a former member of the Chamber of Commerce, the V.F.W., American Legion, Riley-Vest Post #9, and the Sacred Hearth Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Carrie Banks Romano; a son, Joseph Romano; three brothers; and two sisters. He was the last survinving member of his immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Velma Kathleen Cox and husband, George, of Lewes Del., Alena Caldwell of Bluefield, WV, and Mimi Spry of Bluefield, WV; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Romano of Princeton, WV; eight granchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews in the United States, Italy and Australia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Friday, March 14, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Patsy J. Iaquinta, V.F., as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Princeton, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Sandy River District Post #175 and the Mercer County Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark Caldwell, Barry Spry, Gary Spry, Greg Spry; nephews, Joe Romano, Pat Romano, Frank Romano; and son-in-law, George Cox. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion, Riley Vest-Post #9. The family may be reached at the home of Alena Caldwell or Mimi Spry. Arrangements are by Mercer Funeral Home, Bluefield, W.Va.
