Obituary of Hobert Skaggs
Hobert Skaggs, who led his son Ricky into the world of country music at age 5, died Friday of a rare blood disease. Skaggs, 74, was a welder for construction companies in Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. He bought his second son, Ricky, a mandolin and taught him three chords even before he started first grade. The elder Skaggs played guitar to his son's accompaniment, and Ricky, considered a child prodigy on the mandolin, went on to international fame on the instrument. Ricky Skaggs started out as a bluegrass picker, but switched to more traditional country music on his way to stardom. "I couldn't have asked for a better father," he said. "He was a Christian man and very devoted to my mother." Hobert Skaggs belonged to Cordell Freewill Baptist Church. He was born July 25, 1922, at Redbush, a son of the late John M. and Pearlie Ferguson Skaggs. Surviving, in addition to Ricky, are his wife, Dorothy May Thompson Skaggs of Blaine; two other sons, Garold J. Skaggs of Greenup and Gary Skaggs of West Liberty; a daughter, Linda Skaggs of San Jose, Calif., a brother, Homan Skaggs of Grove City, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Louisa by the Rev. Roger Jordan, the Rev. Bondie Salyer and Clavis Adkins. Burial will be in the Skaggs family cemetery in Blaine. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Lawrence County.
